During nesting season, you may see social media posts recommending putting out various materials for birds to supplement their nest-building efforts.

While these posts have good intentions, a lot of the suggestions (such as string or dryer lint) are actually unsafe for birds!

If you do choose to leave out materials for birds to use for their nests, ensure they're naturally sourced, like twigs, bark strips, or moss.

Birds are generally great at finding the natural materials that they need to build a home for their babies, without our help. But what can be more challenging for them is finding enough food to keep up with their nestlings' voracious appetites!

And this is where we can help out: by growing diverse, native plant species wherever possible -like our gardens, balconies, and community spaces. Those native plants support native insects, which, yep, turn into great food for baby birds!

Kathy and Hugh Chisholm first encountered the Nature Trust when they began to get involved with conservation groups working to protect areas of their own neighbourhood around Frederick Lake. “You can feel pretty helpless in this world,” Hugh says, “but groups like the Nature Trust give the little guy an opportunity to make a difference.”

They have since made a commitment that will make a difference for nature far beyond their lifetimes: they have included the Nature Trust in their Will.

Join us in welcoming our Stewardship Field Assistants, Lucas Taylor and Fiona-Dulanto-Hassenstein!

As Stewardship Field Assistant, they will be monitoring Nature Trust properties, mentoring volunteers, and helping with events (so say hello if you see them!)

Lucas Taylor pursued a bachelor's degree in environmental science at Concordia University and is currently completing the Master of Resource and Environmental Management program at Dalhousie!

Fiona first joined the team in late 2024 as the Land Management Coordinator to provide support while a team member was off on maternity leave. She did so well that we have asked her to stay on as one of our Stewardship Field Assistants this summer, and we're so glad she agreed!

Grateful for the enthusiasm, energy, and expertise this duo will bring to our summer as our field assistants!

In 2001, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, made the momentous decision to donate 1% of their annual sales—not profits—to environmental organizations. This would go to launch what is now a global movement, 1% for the Planet.

We are proud to spotlight several Nova Scotia businesses that show their support for environmental organizations like ourselves, through 1% for the Planet.

Today is !

This year’s theme is “Restore Salmon Rivers,” and we are proud of our role in helping to preserve and protect rivers and watersheds that support the beloved Atlantic Salmon. We recently celebrated conservation success along the North East Margaree, where the healthy watershed will continue to support salmon (and many other species!). We acknowledge that this progress is thanks to countless generations of careful stewardship by the Mi’kmaq and community organizations we work alongside, including the Margaree Salmon Association, Atlantic Salmon Federation, Nova Scotia Salmon Association and the Margaree Fish Hatchery.

We are honored to be able to do this work, not just in Margaree but supporting healthy salmon habitat in the St. Mary's River alongside fantastic organizations like the St. Mary's River Association.

We are proud to work alongside such incredible organizations and community members that are dedicated to ensuring salmon populations remain healthy and resilient for generations to come.

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for our annual showcase! We were proud to share the Nature Trust’s conservation progress over the last year and come together to look ahead with our executive director Bonnie Sutherland. It was also wonderful to celebrate this year’s conservation of Cape Lahave in partnership with the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg - MODL and we are grateful to Mayor Elspeth McLean-Wile for her remarks on the island and this invaluable partnership.

This event would not have been possible without our generous partners and sponsors. Thank you to our Presenting Sponsor, East Coast Credit Union, and to Tyler Conway for speaking about their commitment to the environment and to community across Nova Scotia.

We are also grateful to our Hospitality Sponsor, Stewart McKelvey and to Ducks Crossing Wine for the lovely wine samplings. Many thanks to our Activation Sponsors for making possible some hands-on learning and fun: Hillside Consulting Ltd., DesignPoint Engineering & Surveying Ltd.,
Fillier Land Surveys Ltd. Berrigan Surveys Ltd, and Deloitte. And of course, our raffle sponsor, Patagonia Halifax for contributing amazing raffle items for the evening!

Thank you to everyone who was able to join us in reflecting on the past year and the months ahead. For those unable to attend, stay tuned for more opportunities coming soon to join us in celebrating and learning together!

Mark Brennan is a Canadian artist who works primarily as a landscape painter and photographer. He's also a Wilderness Property Guardians and Bird's Eye View volunteer.

His commitment to conservation can be traced back to early involvement in protected areas in Nova Scotia in the 1990s, when he captured wild places with canvas and paintbrush from his canoe.

Today is the International Day for Biodiversity! 🌎

This year’s theme, “Acting locally for global impact,” is a reminder that small actions can make a big difference. One easy way to get involved? Head outside and see how many different species you can find and observe.

iNaturalist is a free tool that helps you record observations, identify species, and contribute to biodiversity research, including on Nature Trust-protected lands.

Getting started is easy! Watch our Field Volunteer & Outreach Coordinator, Riki Kerbrat, in the video below to learn how to use iNaturalist and support biodiversity, one observation at a time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hi9c_2vf0zo
