Participants receive PAID: skills training, hands-on local employment experience in a variety of settings and in-demand workplace certifications. Open to residents 18-30 yrs old in Northumberland County & Quinte West

* START Now!: Sector Transitions and Readiness for Employment and Self-directed Learning. A new no-cost employment and self-directed learning opportunity for residents of Northumberland County (15+ years of age). Participants receive one-on-one job coaching and are personally matched with one of our partner employers in manufacturing or tourism/hospitality industry. Details: https://startnow.ck.page

DEVELOPMENT:

Career Development for Youth in Northumberland:
* This project focused on the growth within careers related to the expansion of the aging demographic. This aging cohort is expected to grow over the next 30 years. The project identified current careers, as well as projected future careers. This information will assist youth in making career and training choices allowing them to live and work in Northumberland. Career Development for Mature Workers:
* A project that assists mature workers in understanding the use of networking as an effective tool in their local employment search. Networking is not only an effective job search strategy, it is also a skill required to connect with lifelong career opportunities and for social engagement. Intergenerational Development:
* This project identified the skills and knowledge of community seniors. The information can benefit the community through mentoring, succession planning and career development for youth. Financial Literacy Project:
* Was offered in Northumberland and Peterborough and provided over 700 students with professional mentors to assist in understanding the key components of financial literacy. INNOVATION & IMPROVEMENT:

Youth Employment:
* Knowledge Based on the Growth of the Senior Population. This project was developed in co-operation with Western University’s Sam Katz Community Health and Aging Research Unit. This project identified current careers and forecasts future careers based on the growth of goods and services required by seniors over the next 30 years. MyHomeWorks:
* A web site designed to help students, teachers and parents explore the local labour market in Northumberland, Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes and Haliburton. Future trends and disruptors are considered as the users predict which jobs will be growing and which will decline. In addition the users learn job search strategies and also details on local employment opportunities. Employment Competencies:
* Competencies describe the skills required to do a job. These skills may be the “soft skills”, the academic, or the technical skills required. This project developed a competency training model for children, youth and adults. Job Search Strategies & Online Training:
* The CTDC has integrated Learning Management System (LMS) on their website. Currently running two, free, online training programs which are both 6-weeks in length - Culinary Assistant and Personal Care Assistant. Open Minds Northumberland:
* A project in partnership with Northumberland County Economic Development that focused on providing grade 7 & 8 students an opportunity to spend a week fully engaged in the agricultural industry. Open Minds Northumberland was recognized as an innovative program by Ontario Economic Development (recipient of Award of Merit).

What does our Youth Employment Program actually feel like for someone going through it?

Feedback from one of our participants was that, “If you’re struggling to find your footing with work, this program teaches you the skills and confidence to move forward.” For each participant, that can look a little different.

We designed this program to help you discover (and build on) YOUR unique strengths, gain practical real-world experience, and explore where you want to go next — with support from our job coach along the way.

It’s also paid, so you can earn an income while building your skills and experience.

✔️This paid 13-week program is open to eligible job seekers ages 18–30 years of age in Northumberland County, Peterborough, and Quinte West areas.

This week we've been highlighting our six national and international speakers and today, we’re pleased to introduce Dr. Kathryn Walton.

Dr. Walton is Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition at the University of Guelph and Associate Director of the Guelph Family Health Study. Her research focuses on children’s healthy growth and development, including nutrition, feeding practices and early-life health.

Her presentation, How Children Eat: Supporting Healthy Eating Behaviours, Growth and Brain Development in the Early Years, will explore how nutrition and supportive feeding practices help shape children’s development.

Dr. Bonada is the Managing Director of Climate Science for the Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation at the University of Waterloo and will be sharing her expertise on how extreme weather, including heat waves, flooding, wildfires and wildfire smoke, are increasingly affecting children, families, schools and educators.

These hazards can disrupt health, learning, daily routines and school operations, while placing additional pressures on caregivers and education professionals. Dr. Bonada will also highlight practical actions that schools, child-care settings, families and communities can take to reduce risk, strengthen preparedness, and create safer, more climate-resilient environments for children.

Professor Janet Rose is Vice-Chancellor of Norland University of Early Childhood, a specialist early years higher education institution based in the UK, and was awarded a Fellowship in Early Relational Health (Infant Mental Health) from the University of Massachusetts.

Norland was recently awarded university status and is now the first university dedicated to early childhood. Founded in 1892, Norland University is world-famous for providing the very best early years training and education.

Professor Rose will join us virtually from the UK and will be speaking to the important role early years practitioners play in shaping children's developing brains.

We're so pleased to have Dr. Dan Wuori joining us our keynote speaker! You'll hear Dr. Wuori explore why the early years matter, how longstanding approaches to early childhood policy sacrifice the needs of young children in favour of promoting adult employment, and why rethinking the system makes good sense regardless of political perspective.

Dr. Wuori has 30 years of early years leadership and is the Founder and President of Early Childhood Policy Solutions, a bipartisan public policy consultancy focused on the needs of young children, their families, and the early years professionals who serve them.

However, to parents the world over, Dan is known not for his policy work, but for his innovative use of social media to educate about infants and toddlers.

His book, The Daycare Myth: What We Get Wrong About Early Care and Education (and What We Should Do About It) explores the costly disconnect between what we know and what we do when it comes to the needs of young children.
