Sagesse empowers people of all backgrounds to disrupt structures of abuse through curating environments to heal and lead safe, healthy lives. With innovation as our programming cornerstone, Sagesse works for anyone who has experienced domestic abuse, including people who are at risk of being abused, informally support others, or are involved in s*x work. We work in more than 50 communities across

Alberta – either directly providing service or partnering with agencies to deliver programs on our behalf. We are the backbone agency for the Calgary Domestic Violence Collective and Alberta’s provincial IMPACT initiative. In the role of backbone, our job is to steward the creation of a vision and strategy for our collective impact initiatives, mobilizing largescale change and advancing policy to eradicate domestic and s*xual abuse. Our social enterprise arm, ByDesign, is a hub of knowledge, experience, and innovation with an aim to disrupt norms, dispel disbelief, and deepen societal impact.

Yesterday, our CEO Andrea Silverstone testified before the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women (FEWO) on shelters and housing in addressing gender-based violence.

Our message was clear. Emergency shelters are not the solution for most women leaving abuse.

Most survivors need safe, stable, and affordable housing to rebuild their lives. When those options are not available, women are pushed into shelters by default. This overburdens systems meant for high-risk situations and limits access for those who need immediate protection.

Shelters are critical. They are not a catch-all solution.

We need to:

-Strengthen shelters for high-risk cases
-Build real housing pathways
-Invest in community-based supports

Women do not all need the same response. Our systems must reflect that.

We’re proud to share that Sagesse is now a member of PATHS, the Provincial Association of Transition Houses and Services of Saskatchewan.

PATHS brings organizations together across the province to strengthen supports and improve how we respond to people impacted by domestic abuse.

This week, Andrea Silverstone and Jodi Hartung are attending our first Advisory Committee meeting, connecting with partners, sharing insights, and learning together.

We’re honoured to be part of this collaborative network and the important work happening across Saskatchewan.

A major decision came out today in Canada.

The Supreme Court has recognized intimate partner violence as its own legal harm, meaning survivors may now be able to take civil action against the person who caused them abuse.

This matters because abuse is not only physical.

It can look like:
• Feeling afraid much of the time
• Not having control over your own decisions
• Not being able to make choices you feel are best for you or your children
• Changing your behaviour to avoid anger, punishment, or retaliation
• Feeling like you are constantly walking on eggshells
• Being isolated, monitored, or controlled in ways others cannot see

The Court recognized that these patterns, often called coercive control, are real and harmful and take away a person’s freedom and autonomy.

At Sagesse, this reflects what we hear every day from the people we support.

If this feels familiar, you are not alone.
If you are supporting someone, your care and presence matter.

This decision is an important step forward, but support, connection, and prevention are still essential.
