It's been our pleasure to hit the road and connect with so many of our members and their networks as we consider the questions on Alberta's upcoming referendum, and what the results could mean for our sector and communities.

These conversations have reinforced what we already know: Alberta's nonprofit sector is thoughtful, compassionate, engaged, and deeply committed to the people and communities it serves.

As we enter the final days before Albertans head to the polls on October 19, we encourage everyone to stay informed, ask questions, and make their voices heard.

Thank you to the organizations that have welcomed us into their spaces, and to everyone who has shared their perspectives, questions, and insights. These conversations matter, and they won't end when the votes are counted.

We’ve reached Question 10, the final question on Alberta’s October 19 referendum ballot — and this one is about Alberta’s future in Canada.

Question 10: Fast Facts
👉 It’s non-binding — meaning the government is not legally required to act on the result.

Voters will choose between two options:
• Remain in Canada, or
• Begin the legal process toward holding a binding provincial referendum on separation.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Choosing the second option would not mean Alberta separates from Canada. It would begin a legal process that could eventually lead to a binding referendum - and THAT is when we’d be asked to vote on whether we want to to stay or go.
• Any move toward separation would involve additional legal and constitutional steps before it could proceed. No change would happen immediately as a result of the October 19 vote. This is more of a signal, and direction to the Province for what steps should come next.

We’re proud of this agreement and what it signals: City Hall is listening, and Calgary’s nonprofit sector is finally being treated as the essential infrastructure it is.

Nonprofit leaders everywhere are investigating ethical use of AI tools to advance their missions, responsibly.

Meet Steven Archambault, Co-founder of Stonewall Recovery who shares how AI has moved his organization’s operational goals “leaps and bounds ahead” by reducing administrative time and freeing him to focus on what Stonewall Recovery is here to do: serve those struggling with addiction.

Through NonprofitNow+, with support from RBC and Calgary Foundation , and with expanded access made possible by ATB Financial Financial, nonprofit leaders are exploring how AI can be used thoughtfully and strategically to strengthen their organizations and better serve their communities.

Last up in the constitutional section of our referendum series is Question 9, which looks at what happens when valid federal and provincial laws conflict.

Question 9: Fast Facts
👉 A majority Yes requires the Alberta government to pursue the constitutional amendment, but Alberta cannot make the change on its own.

A few things to keep in mind:
• Currently, when valid federal and provincial laws conflict and cannot operate together, federal law takes priority. This is known as federal paramountcy.
• A Yes vote supports pursuing an amendment that would give provincial law priority in areas of provincial or shared jurisdiction. A No vote supports maintaining the current approach.
• Like Questions 6 and 8, the amendment would require the 7/50 formula: approval from Parliament and at least seven provinces representing at least 50% of Canada’s population.

Next up in our referendum series is Question 8, the third of four constitutional questions on Alberta’s October 19 ballot.

It asks whether provinces should have the constitutional authority to opt out of certain federal programs while retaining the associated federal funding.

Question 8: Fast Facts
👉 A majority Yes requires the Alberta government to pursue the constitutional amendment, but Alberta cannot make the change on its own.

A few things to keep in mind:
• A Yes vote supports creating constitutional authority for provinces to opt out of certain federal programs while retaining the associated federal funding. A No vote supports maintaining the current approach.
• The question doesn’t identify specific programs or funding agreements, so it’s not yet possible to know which programs or funding conditions could be affected.
• Like Question 6, the amendment would require the 7/50 formula: approval from Parliament and at least seven provinces representing at least 50% of Canada’s population.

Our team has had the pleasure of “hitting the road” over the past few weeks, joining friends and partners across the sector as invited presenters to talk about Alberta’s upcoming referendum on October 19 — and what nonprofit organizations may want to consider as they prepare.

The conversations have been thoughtful, productive and incredibly encouraging. We’ve been inspired to see organizations asking good questions, thinking carefully about their role, and stepping up to provide leadership for the communities they serve.
