Calgary Region Immigrant Employment Council (CRIEC) is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to effectively and efficiently connect international trained professionals (ITPs) with Calgary employers – moving them toward successful employment outcomes. As Canada navigates productivity challenges, talent shortages, and the need to diversify its global trade relationships, highly skilled immigrants represent an opportunity to strengthen our workforce, drive innovation, and open doors to new markets.

At THRIVE Calgary, we’re bringing together leaders in economic development, international trade, workforce integration, and talent development for a breakout session focused on how immigrant talent can become a greater catalyst for economic growth.

Drawing on insights from CRIEC’s Immigrant Talent as a Catalyst for Economic Growth report, our panellists will explore how Canada can better leverage international expertise, multilingual capabilities, and global networks to strengthen business competitiveness and build a more connected economy.

The conversation will dig into perspectives on improving talent utilization, expanding global business opportunities, and unlocking practical opportunities for employers, policymakers, and community leaders.

Ms. Muhammad is also committed to supporting internationally trained lawyers, to many of whom she provides mentorship and professional support. She is the founder of Internationally Trained Lawyers Resource Guild and supports multiple organizations that mentor internationally trained lawyers.

We’re thrilled to announce our 2026 THRIVE Calgary keynote speaker: Ruhee Ismail-Teja, MPP!

With Alberta at a pivotal moment, there are few perspectives more relevant than those of leaders who understand the intersection of business, public policy, government, and community.

Ruhee Ismail-Teja is an executive leader in public affairs and economic policy, with cross-sector experience spanning private, public and non-profit sectors. Ruhee currently serves as Vice President, Policy and External Affairs at the Calgary Chamber of Commerce, where she leads the Chamber’s public affairs portfolio, including government relations and advocacy, public policy and thought leadership, media and external relations, Indigenous reconciliation, and inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility initiatives. Prior to this role, Ruhee has worked in the upstream energy industry, post-secondary sector, and contracted with government.

She currently serves on the Werklund Centre (formerly Arts Commons) Board of Directors, Run Calgary Board of Directors and McGill University’s Max Bell School of Public Policy Advisory Board. She has previously served on the YMCA Canada Board of Directors, ParticipACTION Board of Directors, the SAIT Board of Governors and the Queen’s University AMS Board of Directors.

She holds a Master of Public Policy from McGill University’s Max Bell School of Public Policy, a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from Queen’s University and a Governance Essentials Certificate from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

On Tuesday, October 4th, we hosted another successful SmartConnection event with Shell! SmartConnections are highly valued by both our industry partners and mentees.

SmartConnections are dynamic speed-mentoring sessions that create meaningful connections between our mentees and industry professionals. Through the focused conversations, participants gain industry insights, refine their interview skills, receive real-time feedback on their resumes, and build their professional networks.

Our mentees gain a clearer understanding of where the industry is heading, what employers are looking for, and how their skills and experience can translate into emerging opportunities.

One participant, a geoscientist, shared how valuable the opportunity was to hear directly from Shell professionals about CCS development and Alberta’s regulatory landscape, gaining insight into current expectations, technical challenges, and the direction of the industry.

“The event was very helpful for my career journey, both in terms of learning and networking.”
We’re grateful to Shell for sharing their expertise, perspectives, and time with our mentees. Their engagement is what makes SmartConnections such a meaningful experience—and the strong feedback we receive from both our partners and participants continues to reinforce the impact of these events.

Say hello to Syed Musa Raza (PMP)®, one of the voices joining our THRIVE breakout session on immigrant talent and economic growth.
As one of the co-authors of CRIEC’s Immigrant Talent as a Catalyst for Economic Growth report, Musa brings a unique perspective to the conversation. He’ll join fellow leaders to explore how Canada can better recognize and leverage immigrant talent to strengthen productivity, innovation, and global connections.

Syed Musa Raza is a public health and research professional with more than 15 years of experience working across public health, monitoring and evaluation, research, digital transformation, and health systems. He has worked with international organizations, government, and philanthropic institutions, including UNICEF, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Prime Minister's Office, Zenysis Technologies, and CRIEC, contributing to large-scale health and development initiatives across multiple countries.
Musa currently serves as a Senior Advisor with Primary Care Alberta, where he supports research, evaluation, and strategic initiatives. His work in monitoring, evaluation, and data-driven decision-making has contributed to nationally recognized public health programs, including work that received a United Nations award for excellence in monitoring, evaluation, and data-driven systems.
He holds a double master's degree, an MBA and an MS in Public Health, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Public Health. Musa is passionate about evidence, innovation, collaboration, and advancing equitable outcomes.
We’re excited to have Musa bring both his research expertise and practical experience to this important conversation about Canada’s economic future.

Tracy Luca-Huger is the Executive Director at Mentor Canada, a national registered charity dedicated to convening across sectors to build and accelerate the field of mentoring in Canada. The organization is leading Canadian research in mentoring, and is advancing knowledge, resources and tools to build a thriving mentoring eco-system.

Tracy holds an MA in Counselling Psychology from Gonzaga University and is a Certified Canadian Counsellor. She has held executive leadership roles in the social impact and charitable sectors and has been a consultant to mentoring programs and organizations across Canada.

Leading Mentor Canada, Tracy is passionate about creating meaningful connections, building strong, effective strategic alignments and solutions to tackle barriers to quality mentoring opportunities for Canadians and young people across this country. By working alongside governments, industry, schools, academic institutions, and cross sector organizations, at local, regional and national contexts Mentor Canada is scaling and accelerating world-class mentoring in Canada. Tracy and her team are focused on addressing the Mentoring Gap and supporting the advancement of quality mentoring, removing barriers to mentoring opportunities that embrace and meaningfully engage equity deserving youth through a thriving mentoring field in Canada.

We are thrilled to announce Pedro Silva, MBA will be sitting on our Plenary Panel at THRIVE Calgary!

Join us in welcoming Pedro!
Pedro Silva is a husband, father of three boys, and proud immigrant who believes that building a successful life starts with family, resilience, and community. In 2025, he married Astrid, a fellow immigrant from Colombia who arrived in Canada in February 2026. Together, they are raising three boys, ages 9, 10, and 13, while embracing the opportunities and challenges of life in Canada.

Originally from Brazil, Pedro chose to immigrate to Canada on his own in 2011. Since then, he has lived and worked in Toronto, Vancouver, Moncton, and Calgary, gaining firsthand insight into the opportunities and challenges faced by skilled immigrants and newcomers.

Professionally, Pedro brings more than 25 years of international experience in the energy and chemical industries. He began his career with ExxonMobil in Brazil in 1999 and continued his journey with Imperial Oil in Canada. Today, he serves as a Distributor and Business Manager in Canada's chemical sector. A business administrator by training with studies in journalism and two MBA programs, Pedro is passionate about lifelong learning, leadership, and creating opportunities through change.

We’re excited to have Pedro bring his experience and perspective to THRIVE for this important conversation on the role mentorship can play in helping people navigate careers, build confidence, and create opportunities.
