Meet Arlene Oostenbrink, one of our Directors! 👋

Arlene has been a driving force at Closer to Home for over 30 years. Her journey began in a group home, where she saw firsthand how much children missed their families and their roots. That experience shifted her focus - she realized the most effective way to help a child is to provide direct support to the people raising them.

Thirty years later, that focus still drives her work. As a Director, Arlene oversees a wide range of services and programs, from our housing initiatives (Norris House & Home Again) and the North Central Family Resource Network to the Ee-Des-Spoom-Ooh-Soop healing program. She also leads our Training and Evaluation, IT, Quality Assurance, Fund Development, and Communications teams. Beyond our local reach, she heads the Dissemination of the Teaching Family Model across the world, helping other agencies meet these same high standards.

For Arlene, the reward remains the same: seeing families find the tools they need to overcome hurdles and reach the goals they’ve set for themselves.

Stay tuned to learn more about Arlene’s impact on Closer to Home over the years!

As we recognize National Indigenous History Month, Closer to Home would like to share our gratitude for the Indigenous communities who have been stewards of this land since the beginning.

We are honoured to live and work within the traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. We believe that understanding our shared history is essential to building a stronger future.

This June, we celebrate the resilience and heritage of the Siksikaitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy), which is comprised of the Siksika, Kainai, Piikani and Amskapi Piikani Nations, and the shared territories of the Tsuut’ina Nation, Iyarhe Nakoda Nations, Metis Settlements and communities within Alberta, recognizing that their contributions are fundamental to the identity of the community we serve. 🧡

Their advice to anyone on the fence? Just try it — if you don’t, you might just miss out on the most amazing experience of your life.

THAT’S A WRAP! ✨

Our 4th Annual All My Relations Healing Powwow was an incredible success! We are so grateful for a day filled with healing, connection, and community spirit.

This year marked a massive milestone for us, and we want to give a huge, heartfelt THANK YOU to our first-ever Title Sponsor, Sysco Canada 💙 We are incredibly grateful for your partnership and your dedication to our community.

We also want to extend our sincere appreciation to all of our sponsors who stepped up to support this event. Your generosity plays a huge part in making this day possible for everyone!

An event like this takes a village, and we couldn't have done it without everyone involved. Thank you to the Elders and special guests for joining us; to the incredible dancers, drummers, Arena Director, and MCs for sharing your talent and songs; to our vendors and community agencies for bringing your amazing crafts and resources; and to our tireless volunteers for keeping everything running smoothly.

Finally, thank you to our wonderful community for coming out to watch, listen, learn, and heal alongside us. We are already looking forward to seeing you all next year!

A lot of the time we think fostering only supports the children in care, but ask any foster parent and they’ll tell you it changes them just as much. Four years in, Vanessa and Trevan Williams have grown more patient, more adaptable, and more grateful than they ever expected. And with the right support behind them, they’ve never had to figure it out on their own.

If you’re ready to make an impact on a child’s life and experience that kind of growth for yourself, watch Vanessa and Trevan’s full story and take the first step to become a foster parent at ClosertoHome.com/foster-care!

As a Foster Care Coordinator, Emily is the bridge between foster families and Children and Family Services, advocating for children and parents every step of the way, making sure no one has to navigate it alone. 💛

The goal of foster care is always reunification, children returning home to their families, their culture, and their community. And every single day, that’s what we’re working toward together.

Start your story. Watch Emily’s full interview at ClosertoHome.com/foster-care and open your heart and home today!
