It was great to see colleagues and friends from the National Association of Friendship Centres (NAFC) gathered in Calgary this week for their Board of Directors meeting.

Friendship Centres continue to play a vital role in supporting urban Indigenous peoples and strengthening communities across Canada, and it was valuable to discuss the important work happening throughout our amazing communities.

A special thank you to Elder Jackie Bromley for opening the meeting in a good way with her wise teachings and to our Board Grandmother, Leanne Sleigh, for her wisdom, encouragement, and support on day two.

🌿 Thank You, ALCLA Native Plants 🌿

The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary would like to extend our deepest gratitude to ALCLA Native Plants for their generous contribution of native Nicotiana rustica (Traditional To***co) seeds to help support the growing AFCC Elders Lodge Indigenous Gardens.

These sacred to***co seeds were added alongside other generous medicine donations including sage, sweetgrass, and mint — helping to create a meaningful space grounded in culture, healing, connection to the land, and traditional teachings for our Elders and community.

Acts of generosity like this help Indigenous spaces flourish not only physically, but spiritually and culturally as well. We are truly grateful for the care, knowledge, and support shared by ALCLA Native Plants.

If you are looking for native plants, traditional medicines, pollinator-friendly species, or plants of Indigenous cultural interest, we highly encourage you to visit or connect with ALCLA Native Plants. Their passion for native ecology and Indigenous plant knowledge is incredible to see.

Thank you for helping these gardens take root. 🌱🪶

Hidden beneath the soil of Saskatchewan, archaeologists have uncovered evidence of Indigenous life dating back roughly 11,000 years — making the site older than the Egyptian pyramids.

Near Sturgeon Lake First Nation along the North Saskatchewan River, erosion exposed ancient layers containing stone tools, charcoal, fire pits, and remains connected to early Plains hunting cultures, including Bison antiquus, an extinct species that once roamed the region.

Researchers believe the area was used repeatedly over thousands of years, pointing to deep environmental knowledge and long-term relationships with the land.

The project, led in partnership with the Âsowanânihk Council and academic researchers, also reflects what Indigenous oral histories have long maintained: that this region has been a place of gathering, movement, and cultural importance for countless generations.

The discovery is another reminder that Indigenous history in North America stretches back far beyond most school textbooks ever taught.

And today, efforts are growing to protect the site from erosion, logging, and future development so that its history is not lost.

Long before modern borders existed, Indigenous nations were already building knowledge, adapting to the land, and sustaining communities across the continent.

News release
May 13, 2026 – Calgary, Alberta

Today, Corey Hogan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources and Member of Parliament for Calgary Confederation, on behalf of the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety, announced $3.35 million in federal funding to two Calgary organizations for projects supporting crime prevention among Indigenous communities.

The Urban Society for Aboriginal Youth (USAY) will receive $1.25 million under the Crime Prevention Action Fund (CPAF) for a project supporting Indigenous youth at risk of involvement in crime or gangs. Delivered through the USAY Indigenous Youth Centre, the project builds life skills, supports mental health and wellness, and strengthens cultural identity through activities rooted in Indigenous traditions in a safe and welcoming environment. USAY also helps youth and families address immediate needs and connect to appropriate supports.

The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary will receive $2.1 million under the Aboriginal Community Safety Development Contribution Program (ACSDCP)’s Indigenous Community Corrections Initiative (ICCI) for a project supporting Indigenous men and women reintegrating into the community after incarceration or probation. The 24‑week program combines Elder‑guided group sessions, cultural and outdoor activities rooted in Indigenous traditions, and one‑on‑one help for participants to improve their wellbeing and successfully reintegrate into their communities.

The CPAF supports evidence‑based projects that address known risk factors associated with crime among vulnerable people, focusing on youth aged six to 30 and high-risk offenders. The ACSDCP funds Indigenous organizations, Indigenous governments and municipalities, and post-secondary institutions to create community safety solutions that respond to the specific needs and priorities of Indigenous communities.

Today, the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary was honoured to join the Government of Canada for the announcement of a major investment in crime prevention and community safety in Calgary.

AFCC is proud to receive $2.1 million in federal funding to launch and expand the Ahmahtoo’siim-ahkoohmsi (Smudge Vow) Project — a new Indigenous-led justice reintegration program that will support Indigenous individuals transitioning back into community through culturally grounded healing, Elder guidance, traditional teachings, and holistic supports.

This investment recognizes the importance of Indigenous-led solutions and the power of culture, connection, and community in creating safer and healthier futures.

Thank you to Public Safety Canada, MP Corey Hogan, our Elders, staff, and community partners for supporting this important work. Together, we continue to build pathways for healing, belonging, and positive change.

Special congratulations to USAY for also receiving funds for their Seven Feathers Program!

Many Nations. One Family.

The federal announcement highlighted investments in Indigenous-led crime prevention and culturally grounded community safety initiatives in Calgary.

Join the AFCC and Carya for some Powwow dance lessons, traditional art, and food. The Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary (AFCC) is coming together with Carya to invite our community to a beautiful evening of cultural connection, movement, and shared healing.
As part of the Art for All Indigenous Culture Series, this gathering is designed to create a welcoming and culturally safe space where we can all connect and celebrate our traditions in a good way.
This session breaks down specific, high-energy styles like the Women’s and Men’s Fancy dances into easy-to-follow steps. Taught by Shirley Hill and Luke Whiteman, powwow aerobics offers a fantastic way to improve your cardiovascular health, reduce stress, and support your physical wellness while proudly honouring our traditions. You do not need any prior dance experience to participate and have a great time!
Following the meal, the evening will transition into a calm, focused traditional arts session guided by Krista White (Siksapiaki). This is a perfect time to visit with your neighbours, learn a new hands-on skill, and create something beautiful to take home.
Space is limited, so please secure your spot in the circle early!
To register for this event, please contact Nickolas Bishop from Carya directly at [email protected].
We look forward to gathering with you for an unforgettable evening of culture, healing, and connection!
Please note: Carya and the AFCC would like to acknowledge the generous support of the City of Calgary’s Arts and Culture Microgrant for helping make the Art for All series possible.
