Safeway workers endorse new union contract with Sobeys by 91%, avoiding strike.

When 6,000 Alberta Safeway workers stood shoulder-to-shoulder, we proved what happens when working people use collective leverage. By holding a strong strike mandate, we forced the employer to listen and secured a five-year contract averting a strike and winning the respect we deserve.

In 2020, Cargill's beef processing plant in High River, Alberta, was the site of the largest industrial COVID-19 outbreak in North America with devastating consequence for UFCW Local 401 members. The week, the Parkland Institute released the results of the first independent investigation into the crisis delivering a scathing analysis of Alberta’s failure to manage and contain the outbreak.

Today, well over a thousand Calgarians came out to participate in the Tenth Anniversary of the Pokaiks Reconciliation Walk & Event, and came out to join in showing solidarity and marking the importance of the 🧡 . It was great to see the strong turnout and a vibrant event at Contemporary Calgary, which is hosting artists and artisans, performances, Tipi Teachings, Indigenous games and an Elders Niche until 5:00 today!

Truth and reconcilliation is not a once-a-year event. It is a journey we must walk together each and every day.

Truth is not just recongnizing the past attrocities Indigenous people were subject to after contact, it also requires a hard look at what Indigenous people continue to face today. It requires us to listen and make spaces for these stories to be told.

Reconciliation is what we do with that truth when it is spoken. It is about making real change that ends systemic discrimination. It is about ensuring Indigenous people have a say in policies and decisions that will have a direct impact on them and their land. It is about recognizing that, as Treaty People, we all have an obligation to care for one another and this place we call home.

UFCW Local 401 is committed to acting on the truth when spoken towards genuine reconciliation.
