Templestowe Flat Track Racers

Templestowe Flat Track Racers Templestowe Flat Track Racers is Melbourne’s premier on-road radio controlled car racing club TFTR was formed in 1993 and our first President was Greg Collins.

Back then TFTR shared the current site with the Templestowe off road RC club (which was formed around 1983). The current site was split approximately in half with the off road track on the section closest to Porter St, the drivers stand in the middle and then TFTR towards the current disabled parking area. The first event held at TFTR was the 1995 AARCMCC Nationals. This meeting has since been hai

led as a milestone in Australian RC car racing as it signified the beginning of purpose built tracks for EP racing. Renato Benci was TFTR's second President and Reni is still heavily involved in RC through his own business. Around 1998 Nigel George became TFTR's third President. Around this time the off road club ceased to exist and TFTR successfully petitioned the council to use the land formerly used by the off road club. After a great deal of hard work and fund raising the track took shape in the layout that we are familiar with today with the brick club house and disabled ramp to the drivers stand. Andy Cooke became TFTR's fourth President about 2002. In 2002 the first TFTR Masters Event was held and it has been a feature on Australia's RC calendar ever since. In 2004 Nigel again took the reins as President and in 2008, after some years of working with the council, successfully negotiated for the council to resurface the track. The track now has grip the equal of overseas tracks and following a great deal of work from club members we now have graduated concrete curbs which slows a car down, should it cut the corner, without damaging it. Photos of the track being refurbished can be viewed in our Photo Gallery. In 2010 David Stevens took over as President and introduced a number of new facilities including 24x7 Practice Timing. You can find David's annual reports on the club here. After 3 years David stepped down and Hani Abbas took the reins. On 8 December 2013 the club formerly celebrated its 20th birthday and all of the former President's attended the celebration.

Congratulations to our newest Life Members, Ren Benci and Nic Michaelides! 👏

Today, during our drivers briefing, we recognised the incredible contribution both have made to our club over many years. Their dedication, hard work, and persistence played a major role in delivering the world-class facility we enjoy today at TFTR.

From the early days of the club through to the development of our current track, their commitment has helped shape TFTR into the community and racing venue it is today.

You can read more about the history of TFTR on our website: https://tftr.org.au/pages/history

A huge thank you to Ren and Nic from everyone at the club — absolute legends! 🏁

Check out this awesome video prepared by Manningham Council about Templestowe Flat Track Racers!

It captures the great fun our current members enjoy at the track, shows how welcoming the club is for new members, and even gives a shout-out to one of our famous past members Oscar Piastri.

If you’ve ever been curious about getting involved, this is a great glimpse of what TFTR is all about — racing, community, and a lot of fun on the track. 🏁

It’s race week again! 🏁

We’re back on track this Sunday and the forecast is looking fantastic. All the usual classes will be running, and we’re especially keen to see a strong turnout of the Kyosho and 1/12 scale cars.

If you’ve got a friend who’s curious about racing but doesn’t have a car, bring them along — the club has a Kyosho available to borrow so they can join in the action.

We’ll also be screening the F1 and firing up the BBQ for lunch, so it should be a great day at the track.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there! 🏁
