Australian Friends of the Camino

Australian Friends of the Camino The Australian Friends of the Camino Inc. was founded in 2011 to promote the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in Spain.

Since then membership has been growing strongly and in May 2017 we welcomed the 1000th member to join us. The mission of the Australian Friends of the Camino is to:

* promote an awareness of the Camino de Santiago to Australians;
* to assist and encourage those interested in the pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain;
* to cooperate with similar groups in Spain,

France and elsewhere and where possible to join in refurbishing and maintaining facilities to be used for or by pilgrims along the Camino.

When you are walking on the Camino and worried how far you should go that day and whether you will have a bed in an albergue later, perhaps this poem by Christina Rossetti from the 19th century will help:

Uphill

Does the road wind up-hill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day’s journey take the whole long day?
From morn to night, my friend.

But is there for the night a resting-place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.

Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you standing at that door.

Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labour you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, beds for all who come.

Most pilgrims like taking photos while walking on the Camino, to capture an interesting moment, beautiful scenery, the local architecture, the trail, other pilgrims, and even to capture that cafe con leche or un vaso de zumo de naranja. Being able to capture those magical moments as well as we can will make those moments come to life every time we look at those photos even after we have returned home.

Here are some useful tips in capturing those moments on the Camino, including with your phone:

I'm sure many of us have heard claims that the Caminos de Santiago have changed, but how so? Here's what Ricky from Camino Tellers has to say about the evloution of this ancient pilgrimage, based on the statistics from this year. He asks:
* Which routes are now the most popular for people wanting to walk at least 100 km and for those looking for a longer Camino experience?
* What nationality are most pilgrims?
* What does the 'typical' pilgrim look like?
* Why are people walking one or more of the Caminos de Santiago?
* When are the Caminos most crowded?

You might be surprided by the answers.

More Than Steps is a feature-length documentary that follows lifelong friends Justin Skeesuck & Patrick Gray (I'll Push You) as they return to Spain’s legendary Camino de Santiago. What began as two friends tackling the impossible has grown into the Accessible Camino—a movement where people of all abilities come together to experience this ancient pilgrimage. Wheelchairs, walkers, canes, and crutches join hiking boots on the same path, reshaping what community and belonging can look like. This isn’t just about finishing a journey across Spain—it’s about tearing down barriers, rewriting the definition of normal, and showing the world the power of a shared journey.

Discover Justin and Patrick's inspiring journey on the Accessible Camino, showcasing resilience and community. Support this transformative documentary experience.
