👋 MEET THE COACHES — JEMIMA CAREY ⛵

Continuing our Youth Sail Coach Series, we’re introducing Jemima Carey from South Brisbane Sailing Club!

Jemima’s sailing journey began in a Heron with her dad when she was just 8 years old. At 13, she bought an old Heron of her own and spent a year fixing it up — and still sails it whenever she can! ⛵

Her sailing journey has included 10 consecutive years competing at the Heron Nationals, including winning the Junior National Championships, as well as taking on the challenge of competing in the 505 Nationals alongside some incredible sailors.

When asked what class she loves most, Jemima chose the Heron for the nostalgia — but admits the 505 is an incredibly fun boat to sail!

Outside of sailing, Jemima plays guitar, writes music and is studying to become a primary teacher — so she brings plenty of experience both on and off the water. 🎸📚

Her one-word description of Youth Sail?

✨ JOYFUL

And we're looking forward to bringing plenty of that joy to the water at Youth Sail!

# # # 👋 MEET THE YOUTH SAIL COACHES — TRISTAN BROWN ⛵

Next up in our **Youth Sail Coach Series** is **Tristan Brown** from **WAIS**!

Tristan’s sailing journey started young, cruising around Albany with his dad before teaming up with him to race a Mirror dinghy at just 10 years old. By 15, he had moved into the Laser 4.7 — and the rest is history!

Since then, Tristan has achieved some pretty impressive things on the water, including becoming a **2x World Laser Radial Men’s Champion** in 2012 and 2013.

He’s also taken his experience into coaching, working with **multiple Youth World Champions** and supporting sailors at the **Tokyo Olympics**. 🌏🏆

When asked what sailor or team he’d most like to sail with, Tristan chose **Emirates Team New Zealand**, saying he’d love to understand how they continue to evolve and achieve sustained success.

His favourite classes? **ILCA & Wingfoil.** 🌊

Outside of sailing, you’ll find Tristan cycling, spending time with family or watching the **GWS Giants**. 🟠⚫

And his one-word description of Youth Sail?

💬 **“Exhausting but inspirational.” **** 😂

We’re pretty sure the sailors will be hoping for more of the **inspirational** part!

With an incredible coaching team like Tristan and the coaches we’ll be introducing over the coming weeks, Youth Sail is a fantastic opportunity to **learn, develop, challenge yourself and connect with sailors from across WA.**

🙌The DAY BEGINS... The BEST day for WA's Instructors and Coaches... Training and Focus Live - and what a turn out!⭐

👏With 20 Discover Sailing Centre's (DSC) being represented and over 60 instructors/coaches attending. Today is all about WA's Instructors, Discover Sailing Centre Principals, Training Coordinators and Centre Administrators all coming together to share ideas, strengthen training programs and increasing participation at our DSC's!

Stay tuned through the day to see the mix of practical sessions, facilitated discussion and peer learning, with contributions from Nick Neale (National Participation Coordinator), Chief Instructor Nickie Jones, Senior Instructors Carl Watts, Evie Rose, Ian Lane, Libby Boyd, Shelley Charlwood & Will McAullay.

👋 MEET THE COACHES — JOSEPH BAKER ⛵

We’re kicking off our Youth Sail Coach Series by introducing Joseph Baker — and this year’s Youth Sail will be a first for Joseph too!

Originally from the UK, Joseph is new to sailing in Western Australia and is joining us for his first Youth Sail. We’re excited to welcome him to WA and have him be part of the coaching team for 2026.

Joseph’s sailing journey began back in Year 3 during an outdoor education program, where he had the chance to try sailing, kayaking and canoeing. He may have “lied” about already doing the other two sports… so he got to sail over and over again! 😂

Since then, Joseph has gone on to compete at a high level, including being selected for the Great British Sailing Team and winning regattas such as the North-West Topper Championships and Laser National Championships.

But for Joseph, some of his favourite sailing memories aren't necessarily about results — they’re the quality time spent on the water with his grandfather. ❤️

We asked Joseph to describe Youth Sail in one word:

⭐ OPPORTUNITY

And that's exactly what Youth Sail is all about — an opportunity to learn, develop, challenge yourself, meet new sailors and create memories on and off the water.
