Because of you, little Gerry can see again 🐘💚

Gerry was rescued in November 2023 and now lives at the Elephant Conservation Centre in Sumatra. He's playful, happy, and growing fast. But scars on his left eye have taken most of his sight on that side, and that blindness is likely to be permanent.

Your support keeps the Wildlife Ambulance on the road, and on their latest visit, the team found wonderful news. The irritation in Gerry's right eye has eased, and his vision on that side has almost fully returned!

Thanks to you, Gerry got a full check-over and food supplements to help him grow strong. And thanks to you, he'll see the world through at least one bright eye.

Sumatra's forests are burning 🔥

A severe El Niño is fuelling wildfires across the island. In places like Sanglap Village, burning land to clear space for farming is still common, and this year, the risk is greater than ever.

Our Mobile Education Unit lives in the village, working side by side with farmers every day. Together, they're finding safer ways to farm without the need to burn land. These methods help keep water clean, reduce landslides and flooding, and protect the home of orangutans, tigers and elephants.

Have you ever seen an orangutan nest?

Every night, orangutans build a new nest in the trees to sleep in. Using their long arms, they bend and weave branches together into a snug platform, then add leaves for softness. Some orangutans go even further, adding a leafy roof to keep out rain, or tucking in extra leaves as a kind of blanket.

This nest was spotted by our team while out on patrol, in a protected rainforest that YOU help keep safe.

Signs of wild orangutans thriving in the wild will never stop making us smile. Every individual living safe and free is one huge step back from the edge of Extinction for orangutans. 🙏

Beneath Borneo's lowland rainforests lies peatland, layer upon layer of soil built up over thousands of years. 🌿

These peat-swamps hold centuries of stored carbon. They sustain an entire ecosystem, from towering trees, to the orangutans who call them home. But they're fragile.

When drained, degraded peatland catches fire, the damage can be catastrophic. Peat fires smoulder underground for weeks, even months. Put out the flames on the surface, and they can resurface again and again.

This year, fire reached Labanan, home to our BORA Sanctuary. Our teams fought for weeks to protect the orangutans in our care and the vulnerable wildlife around them. 🔥

The fire season isn't over. The forests, and the orangutans who depend on them, still need you.

New evidence shows orangutan mothers actively look for playmates of a similar age for their offspring, sometimes travelling extra distance to find them. Through play, young orangutans grow stronger and build the important social skills they need for life in the wild 🦧

While you might be able to spot this Sumatran tiger in this trail camera photo, spotting one in the wild is much harder.

Because there's LESS THAN 300 left in the wild. They are Critically Endangered, emphasis on the critical. To save them, we must protect every single one from danger, and keep their forest homes thriving.

Did you know that baby elephants can stand within 20 minutes of being born?!

When Felix first arrived at our rescue centre, he was shy, sensitive, and stayed close to his carers. His new world still felt like a lot to take in. But something beautiful has been happening at Jungle School.

Enter Pansy: confident, brave, and always the first to climb highest into the canopy. Felix has become her shadow - watching her every move, copying her climbs, and following her lead into the treetops. And slowly, we're seeing a different Felix emerge. He's braver. He's more curious. He's spending less time seeking comfort from his human carers and more time simply being an orangutan.

This is exactly why peer bonds matter so much in orangutan rehabilitation. Felix isn't just learning to climb. He's learning confidence, independence, and natural orangutan behaviours, all because Pansy showed him the way. The two are now inseparable, even sharing the same night enclosure, drifting off to sleep side by side.

Sometimes the best therapy isn't something we can give - it's a friend who shows you what's possible. 🌿
