🐒 From grassroots stewardship to science innovation
What can happen when a community keeps learning, building evidence and investing in relationships over more than 20 years?
Care for Hedland began with volunteers learning to monitor Flatback turtles at Cemetery Beach. Today, that experience has grown into long-term monitoring, peer mentoring and a new WA-specific climate adaptation trial focused on cooling turtle nesting habitat.
Care for Hedland is one of six learning stories featured at the launch of Communities of Practice in Action β€” our new initiative exploring how coastal stewardship works in practice across WA.

🌊 What does coastal stewardship look like across a large, dispersed region?

Our NACC NRM learning story explores how regional connection can become delivery infrastructure β€” linking communities, Traditional Custodians, rangers, government, science, funding and local action across the Northern Agricultural Region.

It’s one of six learning stories being shared at the launch of Communities of Practice in Action playbook initiative next Friday in Bunbury.

Join us to explore different ways of working together β€” and what can be learned and adapted across WA.

🌊 Communities of Practice in Action β€” launching next Friday in Bunbury
What can we learn from the different ways coastal communities, organisations and partners are working together across WA?
Next Friday, 9 October in Bunbury, WACMN is launching Communities of Practice in Action β€” a new learning exchange initiative bringing together the first round of learning stories from around the state.
One of those stories is shared by Perth NRM who will discuss their project Building Coastal Resilience in Perth’s Communities.
Perth NRM’s model brings together nature-based coastal restoration, citizen science, education, Aboriginal engagement and community participation, connecting five metropolitan councils with local groups, schools and other partners.
The story shows how a coordinating organisation can turn investment and local knowledge into practical action β€” while creating opportunities to learn, share evidence and build longer-term coastal stewardship.
At the Bunbury launch, we’ll share six learning stories from very different parts of WA and explore what they can teach us about:
🌱 building collaboration
πŸ“ working across different places and scales
🀝 connecting communities and organisations
πŸ“Š using evidence to support decisions
πŸ”„ sharing practice that can be adapted elsewhere
Friday 9 October | 8.30 am–12.30 pm

🌊 COASTAL CHANGE DOESN’T STOP AT THE COUNCIL BOUNDARY
Our coast is connected β€” but responsibility for planning, assets, community engagement and day-to-day management is shared across local governments, State agencies and communities.
The Peron Naturaliste Partnership (PNP) provides a regional mechanism for working across those boundaries.
🚁 The PNP drone monitoring project is a great example of this collaboration in action.
The project was established to build a consistent picture of coastal change across vulnerable sites between Cape Peron and Cape Naturaliste, combining seasonal, high-resolution drone surveys with training for council officers and Winjan Aboriginal Corporation rangers.
The pilot brought together PNP, Winjan Aboriginal Corporation, the Department of Transport and Main Roads WA β€” building local capability as well as collecting valuable coastal data.
Seasonal monitoring is now continuing, with future phases proposed to strengthen analysis, evaluation and decision-making within PNP and share the training model more widely across WA.
πŸ“ One region. Multiple partners. Shared evidence. Better-informed decisions.

🌿 COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE IN ACTION
What does coastal restoration look like when local leadership, traditional knowledge and practical action come together?

A story from the South Coast to will share the experience of staged coastal restoration at Esperance Tjaltjraak Boodja Park β€” a practical example of stewardship delivered by local government, traditional owners and community working together to care for coastal places.
