Native Animal Rescue is a not-for-profit, non government incorporated body dedicated to the rehabilitation and release of sick, injured, orphaned and displaced native animals. Native Animal Rescue was WA`s first purpose built wildlife hospital in 2015 through the generosity of a Lotterywest grant. We rely totally on public donations, funds raised through our own fundraising activities and incidental funding grants from other sources. Founded in 1982 Native Animal Rescue is headquartered on a 15 hectare natural bush site in Malaga. Native Animal Rescue cares for more than 4,200 native animals in need each year. This includes native birds, mammals, reptiles, and frogs. We have state-of-the-art facilities to cater for:

- Rehabilitation of black cockatoos and waterbirds,
- Undertaking research on animals such as woylies
- Wildlife Veterinary Hospital
- Translocation projects with DPaW

We are seeing a rise of fishing related injured to our native birds.

This poor cormorant had this hook and lure removed from a evening rescue from our friends at Western Australian Seabird Rescue.

Many of these injuries are more than superficial wounds and require surgery and extended care to rehabilitate 😔

Fishing tackle left behind is litter and causes serious injury to wildlife. We ask that you leave nothing behind when enjoying the outdoors.

Today is International vet nurse day.

Every single day our vet nurses work incredibly hard to care for our wildlife. From triage, to rehabilitation and working with our vets during surgery. There is never a dull moment for our hard working nurses.

TURTLES ARE ON THE MOVE!!!

Yesterday we saw a lot of turtles on the move! The start of nesting season is here. Female turtles are out of the wetlands looking for nesting sites.

They have a lot to navigate around our urban areas, and need our help too keep them safe. From navigating roads, bikes, pets and having their nest predated by foxes and ravens they need all the help they can get to ensure the population keeps healthy.

How you can help:

🐢 Slow down near wetlands, if you see a turtle stop to let it cross, alert others when possible. Be aware when approaching roads near wetlands.

🐢 Keep your dog on a lead near wetlands, this help to stop female turtles being scared off during the nesting process

🐢 If you find an injured turtle call the Wildcare helpline

Everyday looks different at Perth Wildlife Hospital. We never know what wildlife will come through the door.

Each day we admit new patients, rehabilitate existing patients, feed and care for our orphaned patients, perform surgeries and medicate unwell patients.

It takes an incredibly dedicated team to run a wildlife hospital 365 days of the year and our amazing teams makes it happen day in, day out.

Recently we had 3 echidnas admitted in one day!

This one was found on the road. After a health assessment by our vet team, this lucky echidna was deemed healthy and fit. She was found in the middle of a built up area and appears to have been displaced so was released into the closest state forest near her found location.

This Red tailed that had been in a tree and was being attacked by ravens at a business in Wangara.

The red tail was about 5 meters up the tree, we managed to reach him with an extended soft pole with cloth on the end. If he couldn't fly he would then come down lower so we could net him. He flew off and over the warehouse, then did a big U turn back and landed in another taller tree about 20 meters up.

The 3 ravens started again to attack the Red tail, making him fly out of the tree and onto the ground about 20 Mtrs away from us. He was still surrounded by the ravens. We ran over at top speed and netted him on the ground.

This little guy had only 2 tail feathers left and one of those were broken, suffered superficial wounds to his tail base. He was taken straight down to Perth Zoo.

The good news is he's now with us in rehab and doing well.

One of the most remarkable recovery stories comes from this barn owl known by his rescuers as "Braveheart"

He was found by a lady driving by in a residential front garden sitting on the ground, after magpies chased him into a pocket of thick bushland.

He was face planted and spread eagled over a grass tree. Lee wrapped him up and placed him in the carrier and called us.

On arrival he was unconscious and bleeding terribly. He was started him on the strongest treatment we can offer to treat the blood loss and for the shock and dehydration. It was very touch and go, especially that first 24hrs.

By that evening we were pleasantly surprised to see him trying to stand in the ICU and his bleeding starting to slow. By week 2, he was so active and eating incredibly well by himself. After 3 weeks of treatment his blood counts were back to normal and clotting factors normal again.

The wonderful people involved in is rescue were able to release him back into the wild 🦉

Unfortunately not all patients get the outcome we hope for.

This echidna presented to us with severe dog bite wound and fracture, unfortunately the kindest thing to do was to put it at peace.

While we share lots of cute wildlife patients, we also see horrific injuries and illness on a daily basis 💔

Ending suffering is a form of care and sometimes all that is left to do.

A huge thank you to our amazing team who see some truly awful things but show up every shift ready to help more wildlife. Their dedication is amazing.
