12 Buckets

12 Buckets 12 Buckets is a place for connection and a place to be challenged to grow. 12 Buckets helps local children to flourish regardless of background or circumstance.

It is a safe space for kids to take a break, focus on themselves, dream big and know anything is possible! It has been identified that some primary school students in educationally disadvantaged areas show less resilience at school due to adverse childhood experiences or trauma. Through our one to one mentoring program, our volunteer mentors, help identify a child’s spark, and then, seek to strengthen and grow that spark to help foster resilience and confidence.

Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do for a young person is refuse to let them give up on themselves.

Sam has seen it happen across all kinds of moments in her volunteering with 12 Buckets. In group sessions, in quiet one-on-one time, in activities as unexpected as learning to crochet.

A young person hits a wall, gets frustrated, and wants to walk away. But with the right person beside them, something shifts. The mistake becomes a lesson. The struggle becomes a skill. And the look on their face when they get there is something Sam carries with her.

Building self-belief in a young person does not take much. It just takes someone willing to stay.

Until 30 June, every donation is doubled by AOJ Woods Foundation and another generous supporter, up to $40,000. Help us keep showing up for more young people like the ones Sam shows up for every week.

Check out our little Picassos in the making! πŸŽ¨πŸ–ŒοΈ

We brought out canvases and paints during a one-hour in-school mentoring session and the young people from Boyare Primary School were off and racing β€” straight into full creative mode πŸ˜„πŸŒˆ.

It turned into a surprisingly relaxing session of colour-mixing, experimenting, and mastering their inner artist.

That’s the thing about our mentoring sessions β€” they’re different every week. Some are full-on and busy, and others are super chill (the kind where everyone’s nervous systems collectively take a deep breath) πŸ˜…πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ

Teachers often tell us that even if a young person leaves the classroom feeling stressed for whatever reason, they come back calmer, more regulated, and ready to learn again πŸ“šβœ¨.

Lee-Anne has a standing invitation for anyone who has ever supported 12 Buckets. Come spend an afternoon with us.

Not because we need to prove anything, but because the best way to understand what your donation does is to see it. The kids arriving at school. The mentors showing up. The small moments that add up to something significant. Every cent that comes through the door is looked after carefully and put to work for young people who genuinely need it.

Donors make all of this possible. And Lee-Anne wants you to know that.

Until 30 June, every donation is doubled by AOJ Woods Foundation and another generous supporter, up to $40,000. Help us keep showing up for more young people like the ones Lee-Anne works alongside every day.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MENTOR AT 12 BUCKETS

Today at my mentoring session at Boyare Primary School, I had the absolute pleasure of hanging out with four rambunctious Year 6 boys. They’re pure energy β€” cheeky, loud, and honestly the highlight of my day πŸ˜„βš‘

You can just tell they’re good kids.

They come flying into the 12 Buckets room, handing out high-fives like it’s their job πŸ™Œ and yelling β€œHey Lia!”.

Then we move into our very official routine:
1. Say hi to everyone πŸ‘‹
2. Wash hands 🧼
3. Appoint the Milo Order Taker β€” a role of great power and responsibility β˜•πŸ‘‘

β€œHot or cold Milo?” he asks, like he’s taking orders at a five-star cafΓ© πŸ€΅β€β™‚οΈβœ¨ There are always variations, of course. And when it’s time to scoop the Milo… you’d think we were handling priceless gold dust πŸ˜…πŸ₯„ Very serious. No mistakes.

After that, we sit down together and eat some yummy food β€” fresh fruit and toasted cheese sandwiches were the clear winners today 🍎πŸ₯ͺ

While we were chatting, one of them β€” let’s call him Harry* β€” looked at me mid-toastie and said,
β€œYou know what, Lia… I didn’t want to come to school today. But then I remembered it was my 12 Buckets day, so I came.” πŸ₯ΉπŸ’›

Cue my heart quietly melting into a puddle. I told him, β€œI’m really glad you did, Harry.” πŸ’¬

Then we headed outside for soccer, and they showed me their serious skills with the ball β€” equal parts talent and chaos ⚽πŸ”₯

Days like today are such a beautiful reminder of the Circle of Courage in action: Belonging (high-fives and β€œhey Lia!”), Mastery (soccer skills and Milo-making excellence), Independence (taking on roles and showing up), and Generosity (looking out for each other and sharing the space) 🧑🌈

Ask Lucy about the best parts of leading the school program and her answer comes quickly. The little wins.

A child whose confidence has quietly grown over weeks. A smile from a kid who was guarded when they first arrived. Small shifts that ripple out into the school and into the broader community in ways you can actually see, day after day.

Lucy describes the work as life-changing, and not just for the young people. Being present for those moments, watching kids grow into themselves, is something that stays with you. It is the kind of work that gives back as much as it asks.

Until 30 June, every donation is doubled by AOJ Woods Foundation and another generous supporter, up to $40,000. Help us keep showing up for more young people like the ones Lucy champions every day.

Lunchtime with 12 Buckets at Balga Primary School 🏫🍎

This week we tried something a little different and took our lunchtime activities outdoors β˜€οΈ.
We set up a few options β€” bead-making πŸ“Ώ, board games 🎲, and drawing ✏️🎨.

Our young people engaged really well, and lots of them chose to make bracelets for their mums πŸ’›. Overall, it was a great session with positive participation and plenty of smiles 😊.

This week in our in-school mentoring session at Boyare PS 🏫, two young people chose to do some cooking while the others played sport outside ⚽️. They found cupcake holders in the cupboard, picked a recipe online πŸ“±, gathered ingredients, and worked together to measure, crack eggs, mix, and share jobs πŸ₯£πŸ₯šπŸ§.

At first, the others weren’t very interested πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ. But once they saw how engaged the cooking group was, they gradually joined in and helped πŸ™Œ.

With a bit of encouragement, everyone became more confident working together 🀝.

Baking helped build mastery skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, organisation, creativity, and independence πŸ’ͺ✨ β€” and showed that mastery is about learning and improving, not being perfect straight away 🌱.

In the next mentoring session, one young person wanted to make cupcakes after seeing the leftovers πŸ‘€πŸ§. The rest of the group chose a different activity, so they used the same recipe and baked mostly on their own with some guidance. They grew in confidence, worked with focus 🎯, and later shared the cupcakes with their friends πŸ’›.

Across both sessions, the kitchen became a space for creativity, patience, and pride 🧑 β€” helping young people build practical skills, confidence, and a real sense of achievement πŸŒˆπŸ‘.
