📚 Book of the Month: The Big Book of Rights by Dannika Patterson and illustrated by Amanda Letcher.

Talking to children about rights empowers them to understand how they should
expect to be treated, builds self-worth and teaches them about respecting the rights of others. Children can learn about their rights to be healthy, go to school, play and rest, be listened to, feel safe and be safe and be connected to country and culture.

One of WACSS new favourite books, teaches children just that!

The Big Book of Rights is a beautifully written story about Alexis, who loves books and decides to write a book so that everyone can understand children’s rights.

It was written to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of the Child. Children’s Rights Queensland brought together over 200
children to help create this beautiful storybook.

Can your child name five adults they'd turn to if something didn't feel right?

That's their Helping Hand, one trusted grown-up for each finger.

It might be a parent, a grandparent, a teacher, an auntie, or a family friend. What matters is that your child chose them, knows how to reach them, and knows they'll be listened to.

Try it tonight: trace your child's hand on paper and fill in a name for each finger together. Revisit it every so often, trusted adults can change as kids grow.

Talking about safety doesn't have to be scary. Small conversations, done often, build children who speak up.

Term 1, 2027 "Teen Talk" bookings are officially open!

Our Teen Talk workshops give high school students a safe space to explore the topics that matter, such as abuse awareness, online safety, relationship abuse, consent and po*******hy literacy.

Each topic is 60-90 minutes and can be delivered as a single session, concurrently, or as a series to small or large groups of young people.

Delivered by trauma-informed experienced educators, we know how to engage, empower and have those tricky conversations with young people (that not everyone is comfortable with)!

This month’s book helps children learn about personal safety, setting healthy boundaries, and using their Voice. It encourages children to understand what feels okay, what doesn’t, and how to communicate their feelings with trusted adults.
