Let's do what works!

Getting the right support shouldn't come down to luck.

But for people with intellectual disability in NSW, it can depend on where they live, what services are available and who they come into contact with.

That's why CID is launching a new campaign calling for:

✅ More specialist intellectual disability health teams
✅ More court diversion programs
✅ Strengthening supported decision making

We know what works. With the right support at the right time, people with intellectual disability can get better healthcare, avoid unnecessary contact with the justice system and have more say in decisions about their own lives.

Now it's time to make it happen.

The word "carer" was first published here in NSW, in 1976. 🔬

It came from Clare Stevenson's research into people caring for family at home. Her 1975 survey drew 425 responses, double what was expected.

Her report became the foundation for Carers NSW. 50 years on, we still start by listening to carers.

What do 50 years of supporting carers look like?

In the 1990s, Carers NSW set up telephone support for carers in remote and regional NSW (1991), produced a Carers Information Kit in 11 community languages (1992), and created an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Carer Support Kit (1994). In 2002, our Young Carer Project, Koori Yarning Project and Telegroup counselling won an International Best Practice Award. A new global history of the carers' movement suggests our multicultural and First Nations work likely influenced practice in the UK.

Through it all, one idea has held. As Professor Sue Yeandle writes, in joining together, carers "could emerge from invisibility".

Today, carers can still find each other through free peer support groups, coaching, and counselling with Carer Gateway. Carers NSW is the dedicated Carer Gateway service provider for the Hunter New England, the Central Coast and North Coast of NSW, but wherever you are in NSW or Australia, you can call 1800 422 737 to register for Carer Gateway.
