Two weeks after Maddi brought her extremely premature twin girls home from hospital, she was up breastfeeding at 3am when a voice in her head said "you need to hurt yourself".

Violet and Lily had endured a bumpy start, arriving at just over 31 weeks gestation after a terrifying 170 km/h ambulance ride to a Sydney hospital from Tahmoor, on the city's far outskirts.

Maddi suffered a severe postpartum haemorrhage and was rushed into surgery. Meanwhile, the girls - weighing barely one-and-a-half kilograms - were whisked away to a neonatal intensive care unit. They would remain there for 52 days, requiring multiple medical interventions. The trauma of these early days took their toll.

It was through Gidget Foundation Australia that Maddi started receiving remote telehealth treatment from her counsellor - a woman she calls her "lifeline".

"My village was there. They were there and they caught me," she says.

“I was up at night, about 2am or 3am, and I heard a voice in my head that said, ‘You need to hurt yourself.’”

What should have been one of the happiest times in Maddi’s life quickly became something far more complex. After two years of trying to fall pregnant, she and her husband Hayden were overjoyed to discover they were expecting twins — a surprise they had always joked about, with no family history to suggest it.

But behind the excitement, Maddi’s experience highlights a confronting reality. Research shows women who give birth to multiples are significantly more likely to experience postnatal depression and anxiety — yet Maddi says her mental health was never checked.

The first week at home was fuelled by adrenaline. By week two, cracks began to show. And by week three, Maddi experienced a terrifying episode that left her shaken to her core.

Her story is a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health support for new mothers — especially those navigating the unique challenges of multiple births.

Our Story

Gidget Foundation Australia is a not for profit organisation that provides programs to support the emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents.

We are a group of passionate individuals and professionals raising awareness of Perinatal Depression and Anxiety.

Gidget was the nickname of a vibrant young mother who tragically took her own life while suffering postnatal depression.

She hid her suffering from even her loving family and friends. Together, they created the Gidget Foundation Australia determined that what happened to Gidget would not happen to others.
