Birth for Humankind Birth for Humankind provides pregnancy, birth & postnatal support.

Birth for Humankind is a Melbourne-based non-profit organisation providing free pregnancy, birth and postnatal support to birthing people experiencing social and financial disadvantage. We support young women, women from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, women experiencing homelessness, as well as other people in vulnerable, at-risk or disadvantaged circumstances, who benefit most from continuous care and support but face many barriers that can prevent access to it. Our team of volunteer doulas are dedicated to improving the birth experiences and outcomes to women and birthing people who may otherwise go without adequate care and support.

Support doesn’t stop with our clients!

When doulas have access to community, learning, and ongoing connection, it shapes the care they’re able to offer: before, during, and after birth.

It looks like more informed support. More confidence navigating complex needs. Stronger referral pathways and collaboration between services. And for families, especially those experiencing systemic disadvantage, this can make a real difference.

Our Doula Support Events are about strengthening that ripple effect.

A space to connect with others who understand the work. A space to learn something new and share what you know. A space to feel a bit more resourced walking back into the roles you hold.

Today is World Patient Safety Day đź’›

An opportunity to recognise that safe(r) healthcare isn’t just about clinical procedures and preventing mistakes. It’s also about:

Listening.
Being given information in a way you can understand.
Being involved in decisions about your care.
Having your questions taken seriously.
Informed consent.
Being treated with dignity and respect.

During pregnancy and birth, people can be navigating complex healthcare systems at a time when they may already feel vulnerable.

For people experiencing financial hardship, discrimination, trauma, language barriers or other forms of systemic disadvantage, accessing safe and equitable maternity care can be even more difficult.

Having someone alongside you can make a difference.

Our volunteer doulas provide continuous emotional, physical and practical support, helping clients feel informed, supported and confident to ask questions and participate in decisions about their care.

A doula doesn’t replace clinical care, they complement it!

The work of a doula isn’t meant to be done alone! Featured above is some of the folks who joined us at our last Doula Support Event in June.

These in-person evenings are designed to bring together Birth for Humankind volunteer doulas and the wider birth support community to connect, learn, and support one another.

Join us in the south this time (stay tuned for other events/locations!) for a relaxed 90-minute evening of professional development and networking, featuring guest speaker Lukeyta from Gathered & Held.

Whether you’re a current Birth for Humankind volunteer or a part of the wider birth support community, this is your chance to:
- Grow your network, knowledge, and confidence
- Learn about services that can support your clients before/after their Birth for Humankind journey
- Connect with other birth support workers in your local community

Support doesn’t stop when the baby arrives!

Our 2025–26 data shows the different ways our volunteer doulas supported people experiencing financial hardship and systemic disadvantage throughout their maternity journeys.

Of the 97 doula services delivered:
✨ 59 included pregnancy and birth support
✨ 38 included extended postnatal support

That means our doulas were there not only to support people through pregnancy and birth, but also during the transition into early parenting... a time when practical, emotional and social support is just as important!

From preparing for birth, to navigating appointments and making informed decisions, to providing reassurance and practical support after birth, our doulas walk alongside clients throughout their journey.

Behind every service is a person, a family and a unique experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenting.

We’re so proud of what our volunteer doulas have made possible this year 🩷

As a volunteer doula with Birth for Humankind, you’ll support families — particularly those facing social and financial disadvantage — to feel seen, heard, and respected during pregnancy, birth, and the early postnatal period. You’ll walk alongside clients during one of life’s most transformative moments, helping them find strength, confidence, and culturally-safe support. 
  
When you join our team, you also join a community of more than 50 active volunteer doulas. Together, we learn, grow, and build skills through expert-led training, ongoing mentorship, and free or low-cost professional development designed specifically for birth workers. 
  
If you’re a trained doula, midwife, or student midwife living in Greater Melbourne, and you’re passionate about trauma-informed, inclusive care, we’d love to hear from you.

Pregnancy should be a time of safety. For people experiencing family violence, it can be a time of increased risk.

We woke up this week to yet another devastating report of a woman killed in Australia in the context of domestic and family violence.

We cannot accept this as inevitable. Pregnancy can be a particularly vulnerable time for people experiencing family violence. Violence can begin during pregnancy, or existing violence can escalate. It can include physical and sexual violence, coercive control, financial abuse, reproductive coercion, isolation, threats and controlling access to healthcare.

Around 1 in 7 women who experienced violence from a current partner and were pregnant during the relationship experienced violence during pregnancy. For some, pregnancy was the first time they experienced violence from their partner.

This matters to maternity care.

People experiencing family violence may face barriers to attending appointments, accessing information, making decisions about their care or feeling safe enough to disclose what is happening.

At Birth for Humankind, we believe everyone deserves to feel safe, heard and supported throughout pregnancy, birth and early parenting.

We stand with victim-survivors of domestic and family violence, and we believe preventing violence against women requires action across our communities, services and systems.
