Northern Rivers FDC has offices in Lismore and Tweed Heads that covers all surrounding areas.

Family day care provides quality, affordable professional childcare for children up to 13 years of age in the homes of registered family day care educators

We provide professional, regulated childcare for children 0 - 13 years (and older children in exceptional circumstances) in a homelike environment. Since 1980 we have been providing quality child care and community care services. We provide a spectrum of care choices for all children and their educators, from professional home based care for small children, to special needs care, and after hours in school care. We also provide certified training courses for industry level qualifications.

Recently, some of our NRCS team engaged in an enriching professional development - Koori Curriculum Training. Led by the insightful Jessica Staines, this journey deepened our cultural awareness, knowledge and appreciation, helping us to connect stronger to Country and integrate Indigenous perspectives in our work with children, families and community.

Jessica’s presentation, through her stories and expertise made the experience transformative. One team member shared, "This training opened my eyes to stories and histories that were missing from my understanding. It's not just about knowledge; it's about empathy and connection."

Another shared that it was "a genuine and thought-provoking session, exploring more than I anticipated on social justice and equity, as well as enjoying some fun and engaging moments exploring Country on a deeper level".

The training highlighted the importance of listening and learning to truly support and collaborate with our Indigenous communities. We're excited to apply these insights, enhance our approaches and practices, and to continue reflecting.

Check out this lovely reflection on connecting with community through an excursion from one of our Guyra educators!:

"🐊🦎 A Reptile Adventure at the Library! 🐍🐢

On Wednesday, I joined Val, one of our wonderful Educators in Guyra, and the children for an exciting reptile show at the Guyra library!

The children watched with excitement as the reptile keeper introduced them to some amazing creatures, including a bearded dragon, shingleback lizard, turtle, olive python and even a baby crocodile!

There were lots of curious questions, conversations, laughter and learning along the way. The children discovered that a shingleback lizard can run backwards! Its tail looks like its head, which can help trick other animals. How clever!

The children also had the opportunity to gently touch some of the reptiles. There were lots of comments about how they felt such as “bumpy” , “rough” and “smooth” .

Learning beyond our homes and services

This experience was more than just an exciting reptile show. It gave the children an opportunity to explore their local community, meet new people, learn about the world around them and build confidence in a new environment.

Through regular excursions, Family Day Care provides wonderful opportunities for children to be active members of their community. Our Educators regularly visit story time at the library, community parks, playgroups and local events.

These experiences help children:
• 🌏 Discover the world beyond their usual environment
• 💬 Build language, vocabulary and confidence
• 🤝 Develop relationships with people in their community
• 🏡 Develop a strong sense of belonging
• 🔎 Learn through real-life experiences and exploration

This connects beautifully with Early Years Learning Framework Outcome 2 – Children are connected with and contribute to their world, as the children were given opportunities to connect with their local community, engage with new people and develop an understanding of the world around them, including the natural world.

Most importantly, it reminds us that learning doesn't only happen inside our homes and services, our community is also a classroom!"
