Richmond Riverkeeper

Richmond Riverkeeper Giving the rivers of the Richmond River catchment a community voice.

We represent the recently formed Richmond Riverkeeper Association, convened to give the rivers of the Richmond River catchment a community voice. Our founding members include community representatives, academics from Environmental Science, Earth Law, and Environmental History disciplines, Landcarers with over 30 years experience in riparian restoration, teachers and land stewards with deep connect

ion to the rivers of the Richmond catchment and with direct experience of these floods. We respect and celebrate the unique relationship of Indigenous peoples to the land and waterways of the Richmond River catchment. Our vision is for the rivers, sub-catchments and tributaries of the Richmond River catchment to be healthy, ecologically sustainable, respected by policy and decision-makers, managed actively, and valued by the community. Our Mission is to make the rivers of the Richmond River catchment drinkable, swimmable and fishable again, ensuring the return of the iconic Eastern Freshwater Cod.

🪲 Life is pretty amazing in the upper Wilsons catchment at Upper Coopers Creek but there is still a lot of fine sand moving through after the 2022 floods and landslides and this sand is taking up spaces where water bugs like to be!

❤️‍🩹 Places like these are about as healthy as our catchment gets - it all goes downhill from here!

🎥 All the bait disappeared from the BRUV! Stay tuned for the video 🐟

📣Richmond RiverFest 2026 is back - Expressions of Interest are now open!

Richmond RiverFest is a month-long community celebration of the rivers, cultures and communities of the Northern Rivers and brings much needed connection and hope to the future of the river.

Presented by Richmond Riverkeeper in partnership with local government, industry and community partners , the festival brings together Custodians, community groups, conservation organisations, artists and educators to honour our river systems through storytelling, events and a shared commitment to protection and restoration.

🙌🏽 Richmond RiverFest 2026 runs from World Rivers Day Sunday 27 September to Sunday 25 October.

We welcome events of all shapes and sizes — as long as they connect people to the Richmond River catchment and celebrate or care for our waterways. Events can be led by community groups, Landcare networks, councils, conservation organisations, schools, artists, scientists or passionate individuals.

Examples from past festivals include events big & small:

🌱 Riparian planting and working bees
🚶‍♀️Guided river walks, paddles and boat trips
🎨 Art workshops, photography and storytelling
🪲 Science events, public forums and panels
🎉 Family fun days and community festivals
🐓Field tours and farm visits
🌏Conservation and restoration workshops.

🎧We Are The Riverkeepers podcast latest episode features a conversation with Adele Wessell, President and Riverkeeper of the Richmond Riverkeeper.

Professor of History, Adele Wessell approaches the river a little differently. Having lived in the Northern Rivers for 30 years and teaching history at Southern Cross University over that time, she’s developed a multi-layered relationship with the Richmond in Northern NSW on Widjabal Wia-bal Country.

Hers is personal, as well as professional and steeped in stories of the past – Indigenous and Colonial. She is a founding member of Richmond Riverkeeper as well as the Richmond River Historical Society and has completed a number of projects on local history… including the development of the Richmond River Open Access Repository. It's in the storytelling itself that Adele sees a pathway to connection, and the subsequent care for the river that follows, when that connection is made.

In this episode hear the extraordinary story of the Red Cedars - the reasons for their extraction might surprise you - the actions that caused the wounds that the river carries today.
