We have another focused workshop on the horizon this month to help shape Gender and Disaster Australia’s national research agenda.

Our workshop on Gender Risk and Inequality will be held online on Friday 30 October from 12.00pm - 2.00pm (AEDT) making it easy to participate from anywhere in Australia.

If you are a researcher, practitioner, policymaker or community representative, please join us to identify priorities related to gender, risk and inequality before, during and after disasters, with a focus on improving wellbeing outcomes for women, LGBTIQA+ people and men.

This interactive workshop will explore how gender shapes disaster risk, vulnerability and recovery, including the impacts of gender-based violence, mental health, and social inequality. Participants will work together to identify priority areas for action, emerging issues and opportunities to strengthen prevention, resilience and gender-responsive disaster systems, while ensuring lived experience, intersectionality and community leadership are better reflected in policy and practice.

Through facilitated discussion and collaborative prioritisation activities, participants will identify key evidence gaps, research needs, and opportunities for reform.

WHNR attended the Northern Rivers Housing outreach day last Friday in Grafton providing an opportunity for the community to connect with services they may not usually get the chance to connect in with.

We gathered. We marched. We raised our voices.

At Reclaim the Night last night, our community stood united in demanding an end to violence against women and girls. Every step taken and every voice heard was a reminder that we will not be silent while women continue to experience violence, discrimination and fear.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and stood in solidarity. Your presence helps build a stronger movement for change.

Thank you to Mandy Nolan, Madeleine West, Beth Hamilton and Marnie Davis for presenting such engaging speeches and Annie Monks for your heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country.

Together, we can create a future where women and girls are safe, respected and free.

The fight continues, but so does our collective strength.

We had a lovely afternoon tea catch up last week with some of the founding members and workers of the first Lismore Women's Refuge which was officially opened in 1979. It was wonderful to connect over stories, memories and the shared herstory of women's services in our region.

Listening to the experiences of the women who helped establish refuge services was a powerful reminder of how much has been achieved through the determination, courage and collective action of local women.

Sadly, the demand for women's refuges remains as strong today as it was nearly 50 years ago. While this reality is difficult to reflect on, it also highlights the enduring importance of the work these pioneering women began and the need to continue advocating for safety, support and justice for women and children.

We are deeply grateful for the foundations they built, the changes they fought for and the wisdom they continue to share. Thank you to these incredible women for paving the way and inspiring future generations.
