Your Local and Trusted Charity. Hobart City Mission (HCM) has been serving the people of Southern Tasmania for over 165 years.

This has only been made possible through the generosity of our supporters and volunteers. Established in 1852, HCM was the first City Mission in Australia and is the third oldest Mission in the world. HCM offers assistance to those who need it most in the Southern Tasmanian community by providing emotional, physical and financial support and guidance. We pride ourselves on finding innovative programs and services that empower people and enable them to participate in community life with a sense of dignity, purpose and self-reliance.

Today, Hobart City Mission CEO Adrienne Picone and Board President Peter Gartlan had the opportunity to meet with Her Excellency the Honourable Caroline Wells, Governor of Tasmania, and Dr Rob Walters, to share more about the work of Hobart City Mission and present our latest Impact Report.

It was a valuable opportunity to discuss the challenges facing many people across Tasmania, the growing need for support, and the impact that can be achieved when communities come together to help one another.

We were grateful for the opportunity to share the stories, achievements and outcomes made possible by our supporters, volunteers, staff and partners. Every person who stands alongside Hobart City Mission helps create opportunities for people to access housing, emergency relief and other support and connection so they can live well.

Thank you to Her Excellency and Dr Walters for taking the time to learn more about the people and communities we serve.

What if we stopped treating housing as the end goal and started seeing it as the starting point?

At Hobart City Mission, we see every day that the challenges people face don't exist in isolation. Housing stress, financial hardship, poor health, trauma, family breakdown and social isolation are often deeply connected.

That's why homelessness isn't simply a housing issue. It's a community issue.

While crisis support plays an important role, lasting change requires more than temporary solutions. We need responses that address the root causes of poverty and homelessness and provide a pathway to stability.

That's why we support Housing First.

Housing First recognises that people don't need to solve every challenge in their lives before they deserve a home. Instead, a safe and permanent home provides the foundation from which people can address those challenges with the right support around them.

Because everyone deserves the dignity, security and opportunity that comes with having a place to call home.

As the Anti-Poverty Week ends, our commitment doesn't.

We'll continue walking alongside people across Southern Tasmania, connecting them to the supports they need to live the life they choose.

Because every person deserves to be seen, valued and connected.

A cancer diagnosis is life-changing. Facing it without a home is something no one should have to endure.

Like many people experiencing poverty and homelessness, Simon* wasn't just dealing with one challenge. He was carrying the weight of multiple pressures at once. When he was diagnosed with cancer, the uncertainty of not having a secure place to live added another layer of stress and made an already difficult situation even harder to navigate.

The uncertainty of not knowing where he would sleep, alongside the demands of treatment and the impact on his mental health, made it incredibly difficult to focus on recovery. Every day was spent managing immediate challenges while trying to navigate a serious health condition.

Through Hobart City Mission's Safe Space and strong collaboration with partner services, a coordinated support network was put in place around Simon. This included advocacy, practical assistance, connections to healthcare, and support to help him secure stable housing.

And that's where things began to change.

With a safe and secure place to call home, Simon was no longer forced to focus solely on survival. He could concentrate on his treatment, his wellbeing and his future. The stability of housing, combined with wraparound support, gave him the foundation he needed to recover and regain his strength.

This Anti-Poverty Week, Simon's story is a reminder that poverty and homelessness are rarely the result of poor choices or a lack of effort. Often, they're the result of circumstances that make everyday life harder than most of us can imagine.

It's also a reminder of why Housing First matters.

A home isn't a reward for overcoming hardship. It's the foundation that makes overcoming hardship possible.

As we start planning for Sleep Rough 2027, we'd love to hear from the amazing people who have already taken part over its 5 years.

If you'd like to support and be a part of our Sleep Rough 2027 campaign, we're looking for any past participants willing to share their experience and help inspire others to get involved.

This Anti-Poverty Week, we're challenging one of the most common myths about poverty: that it's caused by poor choices or a lack of effort.

At Hobart City Mission, we see what happens when people are doing their best, but the basics are simply out of reach. We also see the difference that practical support, a safe place to stay, a meal or someone who will listen can make.

But we know that support alone doesn’t fix poverty or homelessness.

We need to think differently about how we respond. Housing First starts with a simple idea – housing is the foundation, not the reward. People need a safe, permanent place to call home with the right support around them to help make it work.

We need to keep working on the things that put people in poverty in the first place – housing, income and access to the support they need.

Everyone deserves the dignity and security that comes with having a safe place to call home.

That’s something worth working towards every week, not just Anti-Poverty Week.

At Hobart City Mission, we provide personalised disability support and Supported Independent Living that helps people build independence, pursue their goals and stay connected to their community 💛

Now that’s a coffee break with a difference! ☕

A huge thank you to the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) for incorporating Hobart City Mission into your 2026 Annual Conference, The Power In Local.

LGAT went above and beyond to organise a coffee cart across the conference, with 100% of proceeds donated to Hobart City Mission, raising an incredible $1,810 🙌

We absolutely love seeing the creative ways businesses and organisations can give back to their community, and this was such a fantastic example of turning something as simple as a conference coffee into meaningful community impact.

It was also a great opportunity for our Hobart City Mission team to be there, connect with people from across Tasmania’s local government sector and share more about the important work we do in our community.

Thank you to LGAT and all the Tasmanian councils, elected representatives and local government teams who grabbed a coffee, made a donation and took the time to connect with us.
