"One of the things that always stands out to me is the strength and resilience of the mothers we work with.
It is very common for young women to come into the program with their own experiences of trauma, mental health concerns and/or family violence.
Many may not have strong support networks or people they can consistently rely on. Despite this, they remain deeply committed to creating loving, safe and nurturing environments for their children.
Getting to work alongside these young women as they build confidence, develop new skills and work towards their goals is incredibly meaningful.
Whether it is supporting a young mother who had not been in a classroom since Grade 7 to return to school while caring for her baby, or seeing a woman recognise her own capability as a parent and feel empowered to leave an unhealthy relationship, it is such a privilege to witness the growth, determination and care they show for both themselves and their children."
Rowena, Small Steps Program Leader
Small Steps give young mums aged 15–25, and their children a safe home when they have nowhere else to go or are at risk of losing custody often because they don’t have stable housing.
Small Steps exist entirely because of our donors’ dedication and generosity, it simply wouldn’t be here without them.
