Wednesday mornings, I sit with young men who are so funny, so smart and so inspiring. But their circumstances, one bad decision or negative influences have led them to be sitting across from me, not in a restaurant, classroom or workplace, but locked up behind bars.

Their journeys to get there may have been difficult, but their pathways forward are bright.

Second Chance Kitchen recognises that everybody deserves a chance. A chance to improve, recognise their mistakes and build a better life moving forward. Bringing some of the best chefs and mentors alongside these young people is life-changing, powerful and inspiring. Not only for them, but for us too.

Being able to cook for your family. Being able to eat healthy food. These are things we can take for granted, but they haven’t been available to everybody.

Independence, job-ready skills and simply having someone there for you are really important to Mitch, myself and every single chef who has come through the program.

Second Chance Kitchen changes lives every week. The success of the program, what it has achieved and the opportunities it has created for some of the people who have gone on to become our staff is mind-blowing.

Thank you Myffy Rigby, for such a beautifully put-together article for SMH Good Weekend, articulating the program in ways that I could not.

To every chef, supplier and every person who has been involved in Second Chance kitchen, thank you.

And to Alex, a future superstar and just one of many who show that turning your life around is possible. - Shaun Christie-David

It’s been two months since we launched Harvest² with Dilmah Tea and MJF Foundation, the biggest project we've ever taken on at Plate It Forward.

Today, we're helping provide nutritious daily meals to 2,700 children across 23 rural schools on Sri Lanka’s East Coast.

But Harvest² is about more than a meal. It's about supporting local farmers, creating jobs for women through community kitchens, growing food in school gardens and building a food system that can strengthen communities for the long term.

Seeing the project come to life over the past two months has been incredibly special, and we're only just getting started.

From Kyiv Social to Swans HQ to People & Culture, Oksana’s journey is a reminder of what happens when people are given the space to grow.

Oksana joined Plate It Forward in 2023 as part of the Kyiv Social launch team, less than a year after arriving from Ukraine. Kyiv Social gave her a place to speak Ukrainian again, connect with guests and teammates, and find little pieces of home in a new country.

Then came Swans HQ, where she quickly grew into a Catering Supervisor role, supporting event planning, scheduling and staff training.

Now, Oksana is stepping into People & Culture, helping welcome and support others as they begin their own Plate It Forward journey. Her calm presence, empathy and lived experience make her a natural fit for helping people feel seen, supported and ready to grow.

When people are given real opportunity, they don’t just step into a role. They build confidence, they discover what they’re capable of, and they help others do the same.

Since 2023, Plate It Forward has partnered with Weave Youth & Community Services to deliver over 3,000 meals each year to young people and families across Sydney.

Weave is a place based, community led organisation working with children, young people and families on Gadigal and Bidjigal lands in Sydney, supporting people experiencing homelessness, justice system involvement, addiction and other complex challenges.

At Weave’s Waterloo drop-in centre, these meals offer more than food. They bring stability, dignity and care to young people who may be experiencing homelessness, complex challenges or life without access to cooking facilities.

More than a meal, this is community in action.

Meet Nola.
A single mum of seven, Nola joined Plate It Forward in March 2023 after facing real barriers to finding stable work, after leaving the justice system. She started as a casual team moved into full-time work within six months and is now our Logistics Coordinator, delivering meals to charity partners across Sydney.

“Stable employment means your life can be better, less stressful. Stability for my home and kids.”

Every week, Nola’s deliveries bring more than food. They bring connection, conversation and care. She’s stepped into the role of a key relationship-holder for many of our partners.
“The people are sitting outside waiting for the van, ready for a chat and excited about the food.”

This is why we do what we do.

Because when people are given real opportunity, they don’t just rebuild their own lives. They help strengthen the lives of others too.
