A huge moment for our Plate It Forward family and Ahana❤️

When we launched Kolkata Social | Indian Restaurant Newtown with Ahana, it was never just about opening another restaurant. It was about creating space for more women, especially women from migrant backgrounds, to step into kitchens, leadership and ownership. Over the past year, Ahana has mentored and led an incredible team, helping create opportunities for women beginning their careers in Australia.

As this journey evolved, so did the conversations, which led us to Ahana now taking full ownership of Kolkata Social and continuing to build it into her story and legacy.

Thank you to every guest who supported this beautiful venue and the people behind it. And to Ahana, thank you for trusting us to be part of the journey. We cannot wait to see what comes next!

This Refugee Week, we celebrate the people who are at the heart of Plate It Forward.

From the chefs in our kitchens to the team members welcoming you through our doors, refugees and people seeking asylum are not just part of our story. They are our story.

They bring with them incredible resilience, rich cultural traditions, family recipes passed down through generations and a determination to build a brighter future.

At Plate It Forward, we believe hospitality can be a powerful force for change. Through employment, training and support, we're creating opportunities for people not just to rebuild their lives, but to thrive.

This week and every week, we honour the journeys, talents and dreams of the people who make our venues what they are.

If you’ve ever been to Kyiv Social, chances are you already know Valentyna.

With her bubbly personality and love of sharing Ukrainian food and culture with our guests, she’s become one of the heartbeats of the venue. But what many people don’t know is that after arriving in Australia in her late 50s with limited English, Kyiv Social became Valentyna’s first job in Australia.

Today, she welcomes guests like family and hosts our Plate Up Together experiences, teaching participants how to make varenyky, Ukraine’s beloved dumplings, while sharing stories, culture and connection around the table.

As Refugee Week begins, we celebrate the incredible contributions refugees make to our workplaces, communities and culture every day. Stories like Valentyna’s remind us that hospitality is about so much more than food. It’s about creating opportunities, building belonging and ensuring people have a place where they feel seen, valued and welcomed. Because when people are given the chance to share their culture, stories and talents, our communities are stronger for it.

EOFY is just around the corner, and if you're looking for a meaningful way to bring your team together, the Plate Up Together experience might be just the thing!

Plate Up Together is a unique experience where teams come together to learn recipes that have been shared within our team's families for generations, hear powerful stories of resilience, and connect through the universal love language of food. The experience ends the best way possible, by sitting down together to enjoy the meal you've created.

More than just a team day out, it's an opportunity to create meaningful impact. Every Plate Up Together experience helps raise funds to provide life changing meals for people experiencing food insecurity in our community.

Bring your team together for an experience that will stay with them long after the day is over. To learn more or book your team, visit our website or send us a DM.

When Mohammed arrived in Australia from Gaza, he had never worked in a kitchen before.

After months of working isolated cleaning shifts while adjusting to life in a new country, he joined the Plate It Forward Production Kitchen with no previous cooking experience.

Today, he helps prepare up to 2,000 meals each week for The Social Meal program, supporting communities experiencing food insecurity across Sydney.

For Mohammed, it’s been about more than just work. It’s been about finding confidence, belonging and community.

Stories like Mohammed’s are at the heart of why we do what we do, creating pathways to opportunity through food and hospitality.

It is a really proud moment for us to announce that will be leading the very first all-female Second Chance Kitchen Program at the Dorchester School within Reiby Juvenile Justice Centre.

Through this inaugural program, Danielle will mentor these young women in practical hospitality skills, helping build confidence and pathways into future employment.

Second Chance Kitchen is our hospitality training program for incarcerated youth, using food as a way to create opportunity, self belief and hope for the future through hands-on cooking lessons, mentoring and practical hospitality training.

To learn more about Second Chance Kitchen and our community led programs, read our 2025 Impact Report via the link in bio.

Five years ago, Plate It Forward started with a simple idea. Today, that idea has grown into a movement using food and hospitality to create opportunity, feed communities and bring people together around the table.

With the release of our 2025 Impact Report, we’ve had the chance to reflect on just how far this community has come. Behind every meal served, every job created and every training placement is a real person, a story and a community that continues to inspire us every single day.

If you'd like to know more about the work we do, please read our Impact Report via the link in bio

We’re excited to share that Plate It Forward has received support from to help grow our food rescue and community meal programs.

That means more high quality surplus ingredients rescued, more nutritious meals for communities experiencing food insecurity and less good food going to waste.

In 2025 alone, our community programs provided almost 120,000 meals and with greater access to surplus ingredients, we can continue growing that impact.

At a time when both food waste and cost of living pressures continue to rise, this work matters more than ever.

Huge thanks to the NSW Government for backing community led solutions that support both people and the planet.

If you’re a foodservice business, supplier or producer interested in supporting this work through surplus ingredients or partnership opportunities, we’d love to hear from you at [email protected]

Excited to share that we are part of the Sydney Community Foundation's “Love Where You Live” campaign, a matched giving initiative to strengthen social cohesion across Sydney, where every dollar donated will be matched, doubling its impact.

Through this campaign, you would be helping to create spaces where people can find connection, opportunity, dignity and a real sense of belonging.

If you would like to be part of it, donate here: https://scf-love-where-you-live.raiselysite.com/

Creating meaningful change through food sits at the core of everything we do and love that SBS Food is putting a national spotlight on such a powerful movement.

Loved being part of this list of legends.

PS: How wonderful is Yakut's (our Kabul Social- Chief of Bread) smile?
