We do this by harnessing the power of food to provide training, employment and other opportunities that enable individuals to self-sustain.

Food has always been about more than what’s on the plate.

We’re proud to be featured in Unilever Food Solutions’ Future Menus Vol. 4 Report, as part of its Culinary Roots trend exploring the growing connection between food, culture, identity and the stories behind what we eat.

For us, those stories live in family recipes, lived experience and the people behind every plate. They’re what make hospitality such a powerful way to bring people together, create opportunity and celebrate cultures that deserve a seat at the table.

One million meals is a huge number to wrap your head around, so we did the maths.

Turns out it’s almost 10 MCGs’ worth of people.

It’s 13,000 meals every week supporting school kids across Australia and Sri Lanka.

It’s thousands of kilos of chicken, rice and veges every year and, frankly, more chopping, prepping and plating than anyone in our kitchen would like us to mention.

But the bit we actually care about can’t be measured in numbers.

It’s a good meal landing in front of someone who needs it most. It’s dignity, comfort and connection. And a whole lot of people, from our kitchen crew to our community partners, making it happen.

One million meals later, we’ve still got plenty more plating to do.

From behind bars to your screens, catch the crew chatting all things Second Chance Kitchen this Saturday on Weekend Sunrise.

Alex epitomises everything Second Chance Kitchen is about. From incarceration to receiving a scholarship to study Law & Criminology, tune in to hear his insights and the story of his powerful journey.

Second Chance Kitchen gives young people practical skills, positive role models and a pathway towards life after detention.

Wednesday mornings, I sit with young men who are so funny, so smart and so inspiring. But their circumstances, one bad decision or negative influences have led them to be sitting across from me, not in a restaurant, classroom or workplace, but locked up behind bars.

Their journeys to get there may have been difficult, but their pathways forward are bright.

Second Chance Kitchen recognises that everybody deserves a chance. A chance to improve, recognise their mistakes and build a better life moving forward. Bringing some of the best chefs and mentors alongside these young people is life-changing, powerful and inspiring. Not only for them, but for us too.

Being able to cook for your family. Being able to eat healthy food. These are things we can take for granted, but they haven’t been available to everybody.

Independence, job-ready skills and simply having someone there for you are really important to Mitch, myself and every single chef who has come through the program.

Second Chance Kitchen changes lives every week. The success of the program, what it has achieved and the opportunities it has created for some of the people who have gone on to become our staff is mind-blowing.

Thank you Myffy Rigby, for such a beautifully put-together article for SMH Good Weekend, articulating the program in ways that I could not.

To every chef, supplier and every person who has been involved in Second Chance kitchen, thank you.

It all started with a need we couldn’t ignore.

When COVID hit, we started cooking for people who needed it. No big kitchen. No big team. Just a belief that if we could help, we should.

One meal became thousands. The kitchen grew. The team grew. And together, we started reaching more communities.

One million meals later, the reason hasn’t changed. We keep showing up, one meal at a time.

And there’s still more to do.

We’ve made it to one million meals donated!

Behind every meal is a community of people who made it possible. Our team, volunteers, partners, donors and every guest who chose to dine, cater or book events with us. So we’re bringing everyone together for one very big party in the Kyiv Social laneway.

We’ve got an amazing line up of special guest chefs firing up the BBQ ( Mitch Orr, Brendán King, Darryl Martin, Nip Liyanapathirana and more!), ice-cold beers, music and plenty of good times as we celebrate one million meals shared and look ahead to the next million.
