This Mid-Year Appeal, Roger, has a message:

"A year ago, I hiked 70 kilometres through the Australian outback with my daughter and granddaughter. I felt strong. I felt healthy. I felt like I had all the time in the world.

I didn’t know that a silent genetic condition was quietly closing my arteries. No symptoms. No warning signs. Nothing!

Without further testing, I might never have known until it was too late. But I was lucky. The research and expertise connected to The Baird Institute gave me a second - not everyone gets that opportunity."

Roger had to undergo triple bypass surgery and has successfully recovered. But not everyone is as fortunate.

Donate before 30 June to help us conduct more life-saving heart disease research.

Perimenopausal women are two times more likely to have a low cardiovascular health score compared to women not yet experiencing perimenopause.

The study recommends that women have more regular check-ups regarding blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels during this time.

Research Highlights: Women should undergo screening for cardiovascular risk factors throughout adulthood, however, perimenopause, which is the transition into menopause, offers a “window of opportunity” to reassess risk and prompt lifestyle changes,...

This financial year, we need your help.

The Baird Institute is advancing cardiac regeneration research to repair damaged heart tissue.

Once thought impossible, this work could amplify the heart’s natural ability to regrow after a heart attack and, in time, help reverse heart failure by allowing patients to regenerate their own hearts.

Donate by 30 June to help make this possible. We are aiming to raise $229,000 to fund a dedicated postdoctoral researcher to keep this research going for the next 18 months.

MID-YEAR APPEAL 2026:

A year ago, Roger Jowett completed a 70-kilometre hike with his daughter and granddaughter. He felt healthy and fit. But sudden signs of elevated blood pressure led to him finding out that he needed triple bypass surgery.

Roger’s story could have ended very differently. But thanks to ongoing cardiac research, the team was able to save his life.

Help us save more lives by making a tax-deductible donation to heart disease research this financial year.

The Baird Institute is committed to supporting patients and families living with aortic disease. We are therefore helping to kick-start a group that is created by patients, for patients, to build a supportive community for those with the shared experience of living with aortic disease.

The group is called the Australian Aortic Support Group and it will be a forum to share practical tips and emotional support, to help navigate life and to thrive after diagnosis.
