We were honoured to welcome Professor Richard Scolyer AO and his wife, Katie, to our Purple for Purpose Gala Dinner in 2025.

Attending one of his first public events following brain tumour surgery, Richard generously shared his experience and support for the epilepsy community.

His courage, warmth and commitment to improving the lives of others left a lasting impression on everyone who met him. We are grateful to have shared that special evening with him and will remember his kindness, advocacy and extraordinary contribution to Australian medicine.

Our thoughts are with Katie, their children, family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.

💜 Would you know what to do if someone had a seizure?

Seizures can be confronting to witness, but your calm response can make a real difference. Whether it’s a convulsive (tonic-clonic) seizure or a non-convulsive (focal) seizure, knowing how to respond safely matters.

✔️ Stay with the person
✔️ Protect them from injury
✔️ Reassure until they recover
✖️ Do not put anything in their mouth
✖️ Do not restrain them

In some situations, calling an ambulance is the best thing you can do. If in doubt, make the call.

Are you aged 18 years or older, currently residing in Australia, living with a chronic physical health condition, have sought care from a healthcare professional for your chronic physical health condition, and can spare 15 minutes to answer a survey?

People living with chronic physical health conditions often report challenges in healthcare interactions, including feeling dismissed or misunderstood.

These experiences appear to be particularly common in conditions that are difficult to diagnose or poorly understood, where symptoms rely heavily on subjective reporting.

We want to hear about your experiences to better understand and measure these broader experiences and help improve these interactions.

Find out more and start the survey here: https://redcap.link/3ih

Treatment of rare childhood epilepsy could begin before birth.

RNA therapy may calm abnormal brain activity of epilepsy in utero, before seizures emerge. The study reveals for the first time how a novel RNA‑based treatment affects brain cell signalling when applied at early stages of development in a rare, severe and treatment‑resistant form of epilepsy caused by changes in a gene called KCNT1.
