Today is National Mentor Appreciation Day, an initiative of Kilfinan Australia that celebrates the mentors who generously share their time, experience and perspective with not-for-profit leaders.

Sometimes supporting an organisation means looking beyond the next grant to what it needs for the long term.

When ACF Fundholder Lara Jeyaretnam discovered Bridging Lanka, she was looking for an opportunity to volunteer alongside her children. What began as a donation grew into a much deeper relationship, with Lara becoming a board member, volunteer and advocate.

Through that relationship, Lara and her husband, Terence Jeyaretnam, saw firsthand the challenges smaller organisations can face in building long-term financial resilience.

As ACF Fundholders, they connected Bridging Lanka with ACF, ultimately leading the organisation to establish an ACF Future Fund – creating a way to build an endowment and strengthen its sustainability for the future.

It’s a powerful example of how philanthropy can extend beyond funding, bringing relationships, knowledge and connections to help organisations build for the long term.

How do we pass generosity from one generation to the next?
For ACF Fundholders Terence Jeyaretnam AM and Lara Jeyaretnam, giving has always extended beyond financial support. Both grew up seeing service to others as part of everyday life – an outlook that continues to shape their philanthropy today.

Now, as parents of three, they’re thinking about how those same values might be passed on to their children: not by prescribing which causes they should support, but by encouraging them to see the world with generosity, curiosity and an “abundance mindset”.

Applications are open for the Bupa Foundation Community Grants program, supporting organisations working towards healthier people, healthier communities, and a healthier planet.

Grants of $10,000, $25,000, and $50,000 are available for innovative projects and initiatives making a positive difference in communities.

Earlier this month, members of the ACF team joined more than 1,200 funders, community leaders and changemakers in Brisbane for the Philanthropy Australia Conference 2026.

Across three days of conversations, some clear themes emerged - from the connection between belonging and generosity to community leadership, collective giving, AI and the role philanthropy can play in shaping the future.

Great giving is built on curiosity. Through learning, listening, and engaging with community-led perspectives, funders can make more informed decisions about where and how to give.

That spirit was truly alive last week at the first session of our VIC Fund Forum 2026, where Fundholders came together to discuss the needs, challenges and opportunities shaping communities across Victoria.

A special thank you to our guest speakers, Rueben Berg - Gellung Warl and Juanita Pope - CEO of VCOSS, for generously sharing their expertise and helping us think more deeply about the role philanthropy can play in supporting long-term change.

We're looking forward to continuing the conversation at our next session in October, where Fundholders will be guided through turning these insights into strategy using the ACF GoodGiving Toolkit.
