Last Friday, Welfare Mission for Migrants and Migrante Melbourne held a consultation with temporary migrant workers facing workplace exploitation.

We sat down with four Filipino workers on 482, 407, 485, and 500 visas, working in hospitality and construction. They shared experiences of wage theft, late or unpaid wages, no superannuation, unpaid overtime, extreme working hours, unfair dismissal, reduced hours, and threats from employers.
Migrante Melbourne also held an orientation, discussing the root causes of Filipino migration and the Philippines' Labor Export Program, a government policy since the 1970s that has treated Filipino workers as an export commodity, prioritising remittances over creating decent jobs at home. It is a system that separates families and leaves workers exposed to exploitation abroad.

Welfare Mission for Migrants and Migrante Melbourne will continue to support these workers and progress their individual cases together with our partner organisations. We will stand with them until they get the justice they deserve and for the broader migrant community to be safe and free.
