The Ironbark and Yellow Gums in Central Victoria are unreal at the moment! It seems like every single tree has been coated in blossoms for months!

And we can't stop playing with them!

These are from a local Red Ironbark, Eucalyptus tricarpa (not to be confused with Eucalyptus sideroxylon, the other Red Ironbark). They were coating the ground like a carpet, after the local lorikeets, rosellas and cockatoos had been through!

What's flowering near you this week? We'd love to see!

Happy , tree friends! Today we want to share with you this beautiful Coolamon-shaped seat carved from the enormous fallen bough of the Guildford Big Tree, a River Red Gum or Biyal in Dja Dja Wurrung.

In 2024, around 25 tonnes of wood fell from this magnificent tree, which is conservatively estimated to be more than 500 years old, but could be more like 1000. Culturally modified long ago by the local Djaara people, the ancient Biyal was beloved by the local community, both human and wildlife. So when those mighty boughs fell, the community came together to make sure they were treasured and honoured.

This Sunday, the Djaara and wider Guildford community welcomed the new Reconciliation Seat back to the Biyal. It felt really special to be gathering together to celebrate the ongoing life of this ancient tree and everything it shares with the community. It was a real reminder of the value and legacy of respecting and caring for big, old trees, whose lifetimes dwarf our own.

The seat was carved by local artisan and former Dahl Fellow Pete McCurley () under the guidance of Uncle Rick Nelson, DJAARA members and key Aboriginal community members.

Uncle Rick hopes that 'the seat will become a place for the community to gather during
difficult times, drawing on the wisdom of a tree that has stood for centuries.
"Sit here on this Reconciliation Seat and draw on the wisdom, strength and knowledge of this old tree. As you work out a dispute, may what it has seen over hundreds of years bring calmness and guide you toward resolution," Uncle Rick said.'

Our annual photo competition is a celebration of Australiaโ€™s iconic trees, inviting photographers of all skill levels to capture the beauty and diversity of eucalypts. This competition highlights the vital role these trees play in our environment and culture.

The theme for the 2026 photo competition is โ€œOur Eucalypt Homeโ€.

We look forward to how you interpret the theme in terms of amazing eucalypt photos. Just remember the eucalypts need to be a significant feature in the photo but with this years theme we understand that a creature may be the ๐ŸŒŸ stars ๐ŸŒŸ of your photo. If that is the case, there should be a demonstration of the importance of the eucalypt.

In your entry, please let us know what makes this image special to you.

๐Ÿ“ธ: Swift Parrot in Tasmanian Blue Gum, Eucalyptus globulus, by Barry Baker.

29/05/2026

: Came across this lovely gum, planted in Castlemaine, Victoria. I'm drawing a blank while keying it out, as I often do with planted gums! I've included some of the features in this video (though not the smooth, coppery bark that looks like it will shed in ribbons). Perhaps you can work it out for us!

Turn the sound on for Red Wattlebirds, New Holland Honeyeaters, Commonly Froglets and more, and let us know what's flowering near you this week!
