From the Melbourne Marathon finish line straight back to work at Epworth Hawthorn! 🏃‍♂️🥉

A massive congratulations to our very own rehabilitation physiotherapist Reece Edwards, who placed third in the men’s Melbourne Marathon over the weekend and was the second Australian across the finish line, with an incredible time of 2:14:33! 👏

Reece won the Melbourne Marathon in 2023, his first ever marathon at the time. There have been many kms run since then including a 2nd place finish in the 2023 Bright Ultra Marathon and another win at the Port Fairy Marathon in 2024.

Despite competing at an elite level around the world, Reece balances his running with a full-time career as a physiotherapist at Epworth. He brings the same dedication and determination to his work, supporting patients as they overcome challenges and work towards their own milestones.

Congratulations, Reece, an incredible achievement and an inspiration to us all! 💙

Thank you to our allied health professionals and assistants for your skill, knowledge, compassion and commitment to helping patients recover, regain independence and achieve the best possible quality of life. 🤝

💚 This World Mental Health Day, we spoke with Jay, a lived and living experience practitioner at Epworth Camberwell.

Jay shares how they draw on their own experiences with mental health challenges to support participants, and how their role allows them to be the person they once needed when they were younger.

This year's World Mental Health Day theme, 'Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change', recognises the unique knowledge and insight that comes from personal experience, and the vital role people with lived and living experience play in mental health services.

A concussion changed everything for local footballer Rory 💙

After suffering a serious concussion in 2024, Rory came under the care of a specialised rehabilitation team through the Epworth Concussion Clinic, where he was admitted to the Acquired Brain Injury Unit at Epworth Richmond and treated for symptoms including extreme sensitivity to light, brain fog and nausea. It was 18 months before he was cleared to return to the field.

During his recovery, Rory discovered the positive impact of triathlon training on his mental health and wellbeing. 🏃‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏊‍♂️

Now, he's turning a personal challenge into an opportunity to help others by taking on 10 half Ironmans in 10 days this October to raise funds for people experiencing homelessness.

Rory has shared his story widely in the hope of raising awareness among other players about the impact of concussion and the importance of prioritising brain health. 🧠

🏗️ Exciting progress at Epworth Eastern!

Construction of our new cardiac catheterisation lab has reached an early milestone, with the shell of the new lab now created within the Level 3 theatre complex. Executive General Manager, Ashley Wheeler, recently viewed the next stages of construction, which will include the detailed fit-out, installation of specialised equipment and preparation for clinical use.

This new facility will increase our capacity to support the continued growth of cardiac services across Melbourne's east enabling patients to be treated locally. ❤️

As Blood Cancer Awareness Month draws to a close, we're reflecting on the important work happening at the Epworth Centre for Immunotherapies and Snowdome Laboratories. ❤️🩸

Through innovative treatments and ongoing research, our expert team of haematologists, oncologists, and researchers are helping people with blood cancer live longer, healthier lives and expanding the treatment options available to patients.

Last week, our team members hosted information tables at Epworth Richmond and Epworth Freemasons, giving staff, patients and visitors the opportunity to learn more about blood cancer, treatment advances and the support available.

If you missed the chance to stop by and chat, you can still learn more about blood cancer symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options and the clinical trials taking place at Epworth. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/4i5oVAY

What a way to kick off the AFL Grand Final weekend! 🏉🥧

Yesterday, our team pulled on their team colours, embraced the footy spirit and came together for one of Epworth’s favourite traditions, Pie Day.

It was a great opportunity to connect, share a laugh, enjoy a pie and embrace the excitement of finals season.

Our Pie Day is a fun way to thank our staff and doctors for their dedication to all Epworth patients. Bring on the AFL Grand Final!

Improving outcomes for people with cancer 🧬🔬💙

This World Cancer Research Day, we celebrate the incredible people across Epworth who are helping turn hope into reality for patients with cancer.

Every day our passionate scientists, researchers and clinicians, as well as clinical trial participants, directly contribute to world class research that has the power to change lives.

Epworth has specialised research centres, clinical trial units, and centres of excellence in pancreatic, prostate and blood cancers, with a focus on improving outcomes and advancing new and better cancer treatments.

In recent ‘gold standard’ examples, clinical trial studies involving Epworth patients have contributed to new immunotherapy cancer treatments becoming more accessible in Australia.

Our research is leading to real life outcomes for people with cancer.

We are incredibly grateful to Epworth Medical Foundation and our generous donors who support cancer research at Epworth, along with our academic partners and collaborators.

‘Gold standard' example of clinical trials leading to real life outcomes 🌟

Medical oncologist Associate Professor Sumitra Ananda led a clinical trial at Epworth Freemasons as part of a global study of pembrolizumab in combination with chemotherapy as a treatment for ovarian cancer.

Pembrolizumab, known as Keytruda, works by harnessing the immune system to find and destroy cancer cells. A/Prof Ananda was the only Australian author of the trial study paper published in April 2026 which was the first to show that immunotherapy can improve the survival of women with recurrent ovarian cancer.

Following this landmark study, access to pembrolizumab has now been expanded through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from 1 September 2026. Clinicians will use their clinical judgement to determine whether pembrolizumab is suitable treatment for eligible patients with advanced or metastatic cancer that is sensitive to immunotherapy.

A/Prof Ananda said every Epworth patient who took part in the clinical trial has contributed to this groundbreaking advancement in cancer treatment, both here in Australia and internationally.
