Geelong Cemeteries Trust is proud to announce a major refurbishment of the crematorium at Geelong Memorial Park, marking a significant step forward in sustainable cremation services.

The multi-stage project, set to be delivered over three years and scheduled to commence mid-2026, reflects a growing industry focus on balancing capacity, environmental performance, and community expectations.

At the centre of the project is the installation of Australia’s first electric hybrid cremator. Although, the project encompasses far more than this technology upgrade.

We look forward to sharing updates with you as this important project takes shape.

Bellarine Memorial Park is officially open 🌿

Last Friday, surrounded by community, we celebrated the opening of Bellarine Memorial Park. The day began with a deeply moving Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony, before we heard from Alison Marchant, who shared her personal connection with cemeteries and Geelong Cemeteries Trust.

The opening also coincided with National Reconciliation Week, providing a meaningful opportunity to connect with Country and reflect on the cultural significance of the landscape.

We were grateful to welcome Ash Skinner from Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, who led a walk and talk on Country, sharing stories of the Bellarine Peninsula and the enduring connection Wadawurrung people have to the land and waterways of the region.

Thank you to Bellarine Catchment Network, whose expertise and enthusiasm helped bring the landscape to life during the community open day, giving visitors a hands-on opportunity to connect with the park’s unique environmental values and share in its broader environmental story.

Whether you're looking for a peaceful, a quiet place to reflect, or simply want to see what's new on the Bellarine, the gates are open and you are warmly welcome.

We're aiming for Net Zero by 2040 — or earlier if technology allows. 🌿

This is a long-term commitment, and one we're already progressing through a range of practical initiatives. There's no shortcut, but there is a plan — and we're moving forward with purpose.

Thank you for following along with our Net Zero series. We look forward to sharing more about our sustainability journey.

Every organisation has a reason. Here's ours. 🌿

Environmental responsibility isn't separate from what we do — it's woven through it. From burial, cremation and memorialisation, to our events, operations and everyday decision-making, we have an opportunity to make choices that are better for our environment.

We care for our communities in life and in death. Taking care of the world they leave behind feels like a natural part of that commitment.

"Following along? We've already covered what Net Zero means and how we're working towards it — and today we're sharing why it matters to us."

Queenscliff Cemetery Extension Update 🌱

Development of the final portion of Queenscliff Cemetery, located in the north-west corner, has now commenced to provide future burial and memorial spaces to support the needs of our growing community.

The works will deliver a new Lawn Section for burials and a Garden Walk for cremation memorials, along with roads, pathways, landscaping and a pavilion.

This extension will be thoughtfully integrated with the existing cemetery, with the heritage and cultural significance of the cemetery being preserved.

For more information, visit: https://gct.net.au/resource/news/queenscliff-cemetery-extension/

We look forward to sharing further updates as this important space continues to take shape.

Beginning in May, development of the final portion of Queenscliff Cemetery (north-west corner) will commence, providing future burial and memorial positions to meet the needs of our growing community.

So, how are we doing it? 🌿

From electrifying our equipment and embracing renewable energy, to introducing natural burial guidelines and thoughtful landscaping — Geelong Cemeteries Trust is taking meaningful, practical steps towards Net Zero.

No single action gets us there alone. It's the combination of initiatives, introduced thoughtfully over time, that will make the difference — while we continue caring for our locations and the communities we serve.

If you missed post 1, head to our page to find out what Net Zero means and why it matters.
