People on JobSeeker are up to 10x more likely to die than people not on income support. That’s from the government’s own Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.
Every social security payment in this country sits below the poverty line, and that’s a deliberate choice. Instead of raising the rate for Anti-Poverty Week, the government announced emergency relief funding that works out to less than $1 per person on income support.
Social security is supposed to give people security. Right now it’s a system built on gatekeeping support and punishing people for minor mistakes, and that’s costing lives.
The Greens will keep fighting to raise the rate of income support, abolish the partner income test and build a social security system that provides support when people most need it.
