The Palestine Action Group Garramilla (PAGG) anti-colonial reading group will be diving into our 3rd book this year!

‘Let This Radicalize You’ is written by prison abolitionist organisers on Turtle Island, Menominee woman Kelly Hayes and Black woman Mariame Kaba.

This book is “a practical guide and imaginative resource for building power in an era of destabilisation and catastrophe” and features the collective wisdom from organisers and activists across various movements on Turtle Island.

Join us if you’re curious about how we could move beyond protests, petitions and appeals to the state; how mutual aid and community defence fit into political organising; and how we can build cross-movement coalitions.

We will be using the accompanying workbook to guide discussions of each chapter. Link to the free workbook on tile 3.

You are encouraged to pace your reading using the schedule on tile 3. However, you are welcomed to join the sessions regardless of where you are in your reading.

There is no pre-reading for this week’s session, but you’re encouraged to watch the virtual book launch video to get a sense of what the book is about. Link to the video available on tile 3.

Send a DM if you’re unwaged and need help accessing the book.

Tiles:

2: pre-reading schedule for weekly zoom sessions and date for in-person meeting (31 May - venue TBC)

The weekly Palestine Action Group Garramilla Anti-Colonial Reading Group meets in-person this week!

Sun 12 Apr (Tomorrow!)
12.30-3pm
Environment Centre NT (Nightcliff)
1 Pavonia Pl, Nightcliff
Larrakia Country

We’ll be discussing how to apply into our political organising lessons from ‘The White Possessive’ by Goenpul woman scholar, Distinguished Professor Aileen Moreton-Robinson.

Anyone welcomed regardless of whether you’ve read the book. We will open with a summary of the book, before diving into the reflection questions.

We return to our weekly Zoom sessions on Thursday 16 Apr, link via QR above.

The White Possessive delves into the concept of whiteness as a form of property/capital that is tied to the disavowal of Indigenous sovereignties and the dispossession of First Nations peoples in Anglo settler states, by using case studies from ‘australia’.

Moreton-Robinson argues that white people (and to an extent, settlers of color) have investments in the white ‘australian’ nation-state because of its role in maintaining whiteness as property that allows intergenerational wealth to be preferentially accumulated by white men and their enablers, at the expense of First Nations peoples.
Despite good intentions, this investment in “patriarchal white sovereignty” shapes the decision-making of white people (and their enablers) through “white possessive logics” that is underpinned by an excessive desire to maintain stolen First Nations lands as white possessions. Anti-Indigenous racism can therefore be understood as these white possessive logics in action, arising from our own anxieties of dispossession as settlers.

The White Possessive therefore raises the question: what are the strategic limitations of white- and settler-led liberation movements on stolen First Nations lands, particularly when the Western nation-state model itself is not recognised as inherently patriarchal, white supremacist, and violent?

We are reading ‘The White Possessive: Property, Power and Indigenous Sovereignty’ by Goenpul woman Aileen Moreton-Robinson till mid April

Anyone welcomed, even if you haven’t read the chapters

Description of book below:

“The White Possessive explores the links between race, sovereignty, and possession through themes of property: owning property, being property, and becoming propertyless… The nation, [Moreton-Robinson] argues, is socially and culturally constructed as a white possession.

Moreton-Robinson reveals how the core values of Australian national identity continue to have their roots in Britishness and colonization, built on the disavowal of Indigenous sovereignty…

This book puts forth a bold new agenda for critical Indigenous studies, that involves a deeper analysis of the prerogatives of white possession within the role of disciplines”

Come along today (Wed 4 Mar) to the fortnightly Free Palestine Coalition Garramilla working bee 🇵🇸

The space is open for people to craft together while processing the colonial violence in the last two weeks, including the police violence against Larrakia Elder Eric Fejo, the US-Israel aggression against Iran and the ongoing genocide in the NT and in Palestine.

Make some protest signs, touch up your old ones, do some beading or collaging.

Also check out our small but growing anti-colonial zine library. Find inspiration to help us make zines locally to make sense of the internationalist colonial violence on these stolen Larrakia lands.

As always, bring some food to share and mask up for collective safety x
