Protecting the environment has a price!

When it comes to protecting and restoring the environment, our NPA ACT volunteers are prepared to put their backs into it, whether it’s removing old stock fencing and invasive plants or planting new trees in the ACT’s parks and reserves.

With the end of the financial year deadline nearly on us, a tax-deductible donation will help us buy tor replace tools and equipment we need for this work.

Please donate to our cause here https://www.npaact.org.au/donate. Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

The ACT’s high country bog and fens are under threat from a changing climate and invasive species.

Join NPA ACT at 6.30pm on 24 June for a webinar to hear from a panel of expert speakers who will talk about the fascinating biodiversity of the bogs and fens and the work being done to protect and rehabilitate them.

Presenters will include aquatic ecologist Dr Matt Betizel, who will talk about the Riek’s Crayfish (Euastacus rieki), plant ecologist Dr Veronica Briceno Rodriguez, and Namadgi ranger Nathan Kay, who has been working on the bogs and fens rehabilitation program.

The walk between Tuggeranong Town Centre and the spectacular Red Rock Gorge on the Murrumbidgee River packs a lot in.

Last Sunday 8 NPA members enjoyed the balmy weather for the walk, which took in rugged terrain along the river to view rapids, gorges and calm pools.

On the return leg they walked along the casuarina-lined Tuggeranong Creek and the old Tuggeranong stone wall, a heritage-listed, 19th-century dry stone wall, which served as a boundary marker between two huge properties in the Tuggeranong Valley.

A small group of NPA Gudgenby Bushies braved the cold in Gudgenby Valley yesterday to plant acacias and eucalypts in rehabilitation sites east of Peppermint Hill. These plantings were replacement plantings.

Hard work was rewarded with great views of the rolling grasslands in the valley, and a pair of wedge-tailed eagles soaring overhead. Hundreds of grey kangaroos occupied the valley below, finding shelter from the cold wind.

Protecting the environment has a price!

Our internationally recognised citizen science project studying the Rosenberg’s goanna (Varanus rosenbergi) is providing vital information that could help protect the goanna, whose population is declining in the ACT.

We hope that our work monitoring the goanna’s habits and habitat, and collecting and analysing DNA to determine whether the ACT goannas are a distinct species or subspecies, will lead to them receiving extra legal protection by being listed as Threatened under federal legislation

With the end of the financial year deadline nearly on us, please make a tax-deductible donation at https://www.npaact.org.au/donate to help us in our work to protect the Rosenberg’s goanna.

Donations over $2 are tax deductible.

To hear more about progress on this project, sign up to the goanna mailing list here https://npaact.us21.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=c14f6bce80b7a4405bf574646&id=6dfb3c7e36

Protecting the environment has a price!

For over 65 years NPA ACT has been raising awareness of and protecting the ACT’s unique natural environment – with education and advocacy, and boots on the ground through regular work parties and citizen science projects.

With the ACT’s natural environment under growing threat from urban development, climate change and invasive species, we need your support more than ever.

The end of financial year deadline is nearly on us. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. Please donate to our cause here https://www.npaact.org.au/donate

What started as a very foggy day turned into perfect crisp and sunny winter conditions for eight adventurous NPA women who spent last Sunday exploring the beautiful forest of Tallaganda, southeast of Queanbeyan, and climbing to the popular bushwalking destination of Serenity Rocks.

The group negotiated lots of ups and downs, a few leeches at creek crossings, a bit of spiky lawyer vine, and clambered up a rock-strewn slope. The effort was worth it, with perfect views to the pointy peak of Mount Palerang and a warm, sunshine-filled lunch at Serenity Rocks.

Do you want to know what trees are growing in the park near your house? Or ever wondered at the difference between a Red Gum and a Red Box?

You’ll find the answers in the third edition of our popular Field Guide to the Native Trees of the ACT, which has just been reprinted.

Written primarily for the non-botanist interested in the native trees of the ACT, this field guide has, since its publication in 1983, been one of our most popular field guides, along with our other guides on the Territory’s birds, reptiles and frogs, butterflies and orchids.

Check out our other field guides at https://www.npaact.org.au/publications
They are available for sale through some ACT bookshops including at the Botanic Gardens, the Arboretum, the National Library and the Book Cow Bookshop.

We’re feeling on top of the world today!

In today’s ACT budget, the government has generously allocated $30,000 a year for 3 years from 2026-27 to support our ongoing work. The funding is in recognition of our contribution to nature conservation, community engagement and advocacy for the Territory’s national parks and protected areas.

The funding will provide welcome administrative support for our many volunteers and programs, including our work parties, walks and outings, publications, citizen science projects, a student scholarship, and community awareness programs.

We warmly thank Ministers Suzanne Orr and Tara Cheyne for their strong support and encouragement for our work.
