Higgins Landcare will be holding its next working bee / information session on Sunday 14 June from 10am to midday at our Brazel Street site in Higgins (Canberra).

There's not a lot to do at the moment. We will concentrate on removing cape w**d from our best areas and lopping off seed heads from any stray African Love Grass that hasn't figured out that winter has arrived. Please join us. No experience necessary.

How enchanting is a massed display of the often under-appreciated little daisy, Vittadinia muelleri (Narrow-leaved Fuzz-Daisy)? Here it is in a newly rehabilitated section of Natural Temperate Grassland at Budjan Galindgi in Franklin. Kudos to the volunteers and ACT Government rangers who care for this beautiful space.

Higgins Landcare was pretty excited to see these lovely Superb Parrots drinking from the drain behind Higgins Shops. Then, we saw them doing it again the following day. It is a spot favoured by the parrots for drinking and bathing due to its openness - easy to spot predators. Higgins Landcare has been granted permission to do a little w**ding in this area so we are equally excited to officially start that new adventure. You will see some new signs there.

Speaking of w**ding and signs, our next working bee will be at our Cantor Crescent site (Fullagar side of the shops) on Sunday, 17 May from 10am to 12 midday. New signs there too. Check them out. Hope to see you there. No landcare experience necessary. All welcome.

It's that time of the year when we are all getting a little chilly and some of us are tempted to take sticks and logs from our public spaces, including our local parks, for our wood stoves. However, think of our wildlife. They don't have access to sustainably sourced firewood from the local hardware shop, so please leave timber where you find it and our wildlife will thrive.

The recent rain has brought our Cantor Crescent grassy woodland to life again. The second last image shows a diverse healthy woodland and just across the road the scourge that is thigh deep African Lovegrass, an exotic transformer w**d. I’m sure you are familiar with it now, our parks and verges are covered in it. Having manually removed huge amounts of this grass from Cantor we were pleased to see today only random regrowth, easily maintained. The remnant native growth is thriving 💕

10 bags of landfill waste collected. Many small pieces of plastic packaging saved from entering our water catchment. In addition to bottles, batteries, vapes, golf balls, heavy metal blades off a commercial mower 😉Liz took first prize with her pedestal fan. Maverick was number one junior with his big ‘little’ bag full. Thanks everyone for your help 💕
