We have frogs coming out of our ears this month! Frog Walk & Talks, Frog Census training, frog photography night & more! The new microforest at Dunlop has flourished in its first year, so we’re having a spring clean on Sunday 13th Sep - come along for a relaxed morning of w**ding, mulching and a cuppa.

Our landcaring groups are ramping up for spring. Pop in, say hello, check out what they’re up to and have a go at caring for your local park or reserve.

Wood collection from Government land is unfortunately out of control in Canberra. A few more of these types of signs across the city would be useful to get the message across to habitual offenders. Please source firewood legally from reputable suppliers.

Bird flu is on our doorstep and feeding wild birds will hasten the spread of H5N1 and Beak and Feather disease. Spread the word -- DON'T feed birds!

G'day. You are invited to our impromptu working bee at Cantor Crescent Higgins landcare site this Saturday, 22 August from 10am to midday. Raincheck if it's wet. We'll be focussing on some residual African Love Grass on our edges and removing some cape w**d. Most of it is easy w**ding. No experience necessary. All welcome.

We are looking forward to a sunny spring filled with yellow buttons (Chrysocephalum apiculatum) and Early Nancys (Wurmbea diocia). In the meantime, we can admire the Pennywort growing around the Blakely's red gum where we had previously removed some Chilean needle grass.

You may have spotted more native plants popping up in your local park or on the side of the road. It's part of a push to create hardier, more beautiful council plantings across Australia.

It's natonal landcare week this week. We want to thank all our volunteers and supporters who have been here with us on this journey for the last five years. Unfortunately landcare in the ACT is in a state of disarray at the moment as the ACT Government has discontinued funding for the three Catchment groups (Molonglo Conservation Group, Southern ACT Catchment Group and Ginninderra Catchment Group) which have worked tirelessly over the last three decades to support boots and shovels on the ground. We would like to thank the Ginninderra Catchment Group for helping get us started, liaising and educating the local Higgins community about the initiative, assisting us with a grant applications and the production of our landcare sign, advocating for us on a range of issues like mowing, invasive w**ds and animals, measures to combat vandalism, and looking for solutions when the ACT Government has dropped the ball. It's a huge legacy and one that we hope will not be put at risk by the ACT government's new preferred delivery model.
We welcome everyone at Higgins Landcare, so please drop in to our working bee this Sunday from 10am at our Cantor Crescent for a chat, a tour or to pull some Chilean needle grass.

For all those frog-lovers out there. Great to see there is a book review of The Great Frog Chorus by Ginninderra Catchment Group's Jed Pearson and Anke Maria Hoeffer, printed in this month's edition of Fronds (the magazine for Friends of the Australian National Botanic Gardens). We are just so proud of them. Such a fabulous book to give as a gift or keep for yourself because who doesn't love frogs? :)

Many of you will have seen photos posted here of the Superb Parrots that visit our local suburb. Please consider signing the epetition objecting to the re-zoning of a block of land, east of Stockdill Drive, that would enable the establish of a permanent greenwaste and bulk landscape supplies yard in the vicinity of a Superb Parrot breeding colony. Superb Parrots are a vulnerable species.

There is a new petition to stop the rezoning of land off Stockdill Drive, Holt (Stockdill adjoins Drake Brockman). The rezoning would allow the establishment of a permanent greenwaste facility and bulk landscape supplies yard on the selected block. Please sign the epetition sponsored by Peter Cain MLA and help protect our threatened species and woodlands, and regional waterways from inappropriate development plannning - https://epetitions.parliament.act.gov.au/details/e-pet-071-26

A new temporary greenwaste drop-off point has now been established a further kilometre down Parkwood road and it looks like it will be suitable for some time. In addition, Tharwa Sands, a short distance from the new facility, will be continuing to sell landscape products to Canberra businesses.

The photo below is of a sign that was erected on a rural road in Murrumbateman in 2019 after a number of Superb Parrots were killed while feeding by the roadside. Let's not tempt fate here by introducing a large volume of cars and trucks to an area that is in the immediate vicinity of a Superb Parrot breeding colony. Superb Parrots are listed as vulnerable under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act. This is why the Suburban Land Agency should not be trusted with environmental stewardship.
