❄️ Snow season has arrived in the Hills!

Which means one thing… the annual pilgrimage to the ALDI ski sale 🛒⛷️ (and yes, the middle aisle always wins).

But before you end up with ski gloves and a waffle maker you didn’t plan on, there’s something worth knowing…

Mums of the Hills has a Ski Gear Library. 🎿💛

It’s a community sharing project where local families borrow outgrown snow gear, jackets, pants, boots and more, so kids can hit the slopes without the full price tag.

Because let’s be honest… kids grow faster than ski gear prices can keep up.

There’s also a limited amount of adult gear available (because warm, dry parents are very important for everyone’s survival on a snow trip ❄️😂).

✨🦋 THE MOTH IS BACK. 🦋✨

The Belgrave Lantern Parade is back this Saturday, and we can’t wait.

Once the sun goes down, Belgrave comes alive with music, glowing lanterns and a whole lot of community magic. And right in the middle of it all will be the Mums of the Hills giant flying moth.

(Yes, every year someone asks if it’s giant glowing butt cheeks. 😂)

But the best place to experience the parade isn’t from the sidelines…

It’s inside it.

🦋 No crowds.
🦋 No blocked views.
🦋 Just music, laughter and the magic of being part of something special.

📍 Meet us in front of Belgrave Library and join us for the fun. Help carry lanterns, flap a wing or simply soak up the atmosphere.

✨ Saturday 20 June

Interested in making your own lantern? If we get the numbers, we'll put on a lantern-making workshop before the parade.

👇 Please hit the "Let Us Know You're Joining Us" button if you'd like to join us. It helps us know who's coming on the night and whether there's enough interest to run a workshop. 💛

Here's Emily Dawson's story behind Dawson Accounting & Business Solutions:accounting.business.solutions

For Emily, the business didn't begin with a grand plan. It began with a simple realisation after years working both in business and alongside accounting firms.

"The spark was realising that I could combine my passion for accounting with what I enjoy most, helping people feel supported, informed and confident about themselves, their finances and their businesses."

Over the years, she saw the same frustrations come up time and time again. Small business owners and individuals often felt disconnected from the people who were supposed to be helping them navigate their finances.

"They often felt like just another number or only heard from their accountant when it was time to lodge something or pay a bill."

Emily knew there was room for something different.

"I wanted to create a business where every client felt valued, regardless of their size, and where the focus was on practical advice, communication and genuine support rather than just compliance."

Like many local business owners, building the business wasn't a dramatic leap of faith. It was a steady journey built around family life, school drop-offs, and raising three young children.

"With three young children to support, I couldn't simply walk away from full-time employment, so I started slowly, taking on clients after hours while continuing to build my experience and industry knowledge."

As the business grew, so did Emily's confidence. She continued investing in education, systems and the business itself, all while balancing the demands of work and family.

And through it all, her biggest supporters have been right beside her.

"My biggest supporters are probably my children. They love hearing about the wins and achievements, and seeing how proud they are makes all the hard work worthwhile."

Emily's experience in both business management and accounting means she understands that most business owners are carrying far more than spreadsheets and tax obligations.

"Most business owners aren't just worried about tax. They're juggling staff, cash flow, customers, family commitments and everything in between."

Today, what makes her most proud isn't a business milestone or financial achievement. It's the trust her clients place in her.

"Seeing the trust that clients place in me is probably what makes me most proud."

Many of those clients began with something small — a tax return, a bookkeeping question, or a request for advice — and have stayed as their businesses have grown.

"Knowing they feel comfortable picking up the phone, asking questions and relying on me as part of their support team is something I never take for granted."

And while she's proud of what she's built, she's equally proud of how she's built it.

"I'm also proud that I've built the business while raising three children. It hasn't always been easy, but it has shown them the value of hard work, resilience and backing yourself."

For Polly, The Mum Routine wasn't created because she wanted to start a cleaning business. It came from understanding firsthand how overwhelming family life can be when you're trying to juggle children, work, home life and everything in between.

"The spark behind The Mum Routine was creating a service that gives overwhelmed families, mums and those needing support an extra pair of hands, helping restore calm and make life feel a little lighter"

As a mum herself, Polly knows that sometimes what families need most isn't advice — it's support.

She originally started by helping people declutter and organise their homes, but quickly realised there was another need emerging.

"When I first started this, I focused on decluttering and organising. Then I quickly realised busy families really need Cleaning. My family and friends thought this was the perfect fit for me because I love creating organised spaces.."

What makes The Mum Routine different is that it was never intended to be just another cleaning service.

"As Mums we just get it, we get what needs to be done. I wanted to create something that wasn’t just a cleaning service but it was a very personalised service going above and beyond.."

Much of Polly's approach comes from her own experiences navigating the mental load that so many parents carry every day. She understands the pressure of trying to keep everything running while caring for everyone else.

"I’ve experienced the mental load that comes with trying to keep everything together and I know how much of a difference even a little bit of support can make."

Today, her goal remains simple: helping families feel lighter.

"I really just want to help families, and take the load off when life feels hard. I pride myself ongoing the extra mile, and Working off intuition to help mums and families feel lighter."

And when she looks at how far the business has come, it's the people around her that make her most proud.

"I’m so proud that I have created a small team of amazing staff who truly care about helping other others. I’ve built something pretty special."

Apologies to Alannah who fastidiously organises me and keeps posts to schedule. Tonight I've gone rogue.

This post is for all those up tonight... and for all those continuing their recovery from bushfires, floods or any event that shaped them.

It's 12:45am and the wind is gusting outside. It sounds like waves crashing as it comes over the ridge and down the valley. I've just looked at the date.... June 10... sigh... Five years ago to the day, I was doing exactly the same thing.

I know there'll be others in our community awake ....listening...waiting. It's hard to gauge where you are along the recovery line. For me... I've now learned that many sounds gets interpreted through this past experience - June 9/10 Storm 2021.

Did you know that if rain hits a tin roof at just the right intensity, it sounds like a bough ripping from a tree? That's my little diddy I'm working through.

Five years later, my brain still knows the difference eventually. But for a moment, every time, I'm back there. For others, it will be a smell or a song.

Healing isn't forgetting. Sometimes it's simply recognising the sound (or smell etc) for what it is a little faster than you did last year.

Sending a cyber to hug to you all.

We were out and about last Tuesday night at the Monbulk Community Bank's Tokens of Appreciation Night.

"What's that?" I hear you ask.

It's a simple but incredibly powerful program. Whenever someone opens a new account or takes out a new product with the branch, they receive a token to donate to a local charity, community group or organisation of their choice.

On Tuesday night, we learned that this one remarkable branch has returned more than $1.6 million to local community organisations through the Tokens of Appreciation program.
What an extraordinary contribution to our region.
We're incredibly grateful to everyone who chose to place their token in the Mums of the Hills box. Every token represents someone taking the time to support the work we do, and that means a great deal to us.

A huge thank you to the team at Monbulk Community Bank for creating such a meaningful way to give back, and to every customer who chose to support Mums of the Hills.

Your support helps us continue building connections, reducing isolation, and creating opportunities for local families throughout our community.

The Tokens of Appreciation Night may be over, but you can still support our work. As a registered charity with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status, all donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. If you'd like to help us continue supporting local families, every donation, big or small, makes a genuine difference.
