The Good Friday Appeal raises funds to enable The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne to provide world class care to our children.

Funds support research, equipment, patient centred care and education. Donate at www.goodfridayappeal.com.au Each year the Good Friday Appeal brings together people from all parts of the community to raise much needed funds for equipment, research and education at The Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne. The great strength of the Appeal lies with the thousands of people from all walks of life, who volunteer their time, expertise and creativity to organise fundraising activities throughout the year. It is thanks to the support of the community that the Appeal continues to grow while maintaining and respecting its long and proud 90 year history.

The money raised gives an early boost to some wonderful programs at The Royal Children's Hospital. It helps fund Child Life Therapy, including its work in the Emergency Department, and the Comfort Kids program, which makes sure kids and their families get clear, gentle information about their care. It also supports RCH TV, the hospital's very own TV station, where shows like Hospital Lingo and Be Positive help kids understand what to expect during their time in hospital.

"How old do I have to be to sit in the front seat of the car?" "When can I drive a car?"

Eddie is always asking about what comes next.

He loves superheroes, Paw Patrol and KPop Demon Hunters, and next year he starts school.

"He's very much a character," his mum Alicia said. "He can be a bit shy at first but once he warms up he's got a lot to say. He'll talk to everybody. He's very inquisitive."

Born prematurely at 27 weeks, Eddie was diagnosed at age two with spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy that affects his lower body and his ability to walk. He has physiotherapy and hydrotherapy at The Royal Children's Hospital, along with Botox injections into his calf muscles every six months, and he wears ankle foot orthoses to support his walking.

"Most of the time he is happy to wear them but he is at an age now where he is starting to notice the difference with the other kids," Alicia said. "So some days he'll push back and not want to wear them."

For Alicia, the RCH has made all the difference.

"It takes a special kind of person to work at the hospital and every person we've come across has been nothing but helpful and passionate."

"We're just proud of what Eddie has been able to achieve up until this point. The opportunities he has had are just amazing and we just know it's the best place. We're just so lucky to have that resource for Eddie."

When you're a kid in hospital, almost nothing is up to you. Not when you wake up, not what happens to your body that day, not who walks through the door next.

Art therapy hands a bit of that back.

It's not craft time. It's a trained therapist sitting down with a child and a table of paint, clay, textas or slime, and letting the child decide what happens next. For kids who can't yet find words for what they're going through (and honestly, plenty of adults can't either), making something is a way of saying it.

The evidence backs it up too: art therapy can ease anxiety, distress and pain, and lift mood during treatment.

Thanks to Good Friday Appeal supporters, this program is nearly doubling in size, with the potential to support around 3,000 children and young people a year. 💜
