Fire has been used to care for Wadawurrung Country for tens of thousands of years.

Narmbool, our 2,000-hectare pastoral property near Elaine, is home to significant areas of native grassland and bushland. It is also a place where caring for Country and sharing knowledge are an important part of the property’s ongoing management.

The Wiyn Murrup Rangers, part of the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation, recently led a cultural burn across Narmbool’s native grasslands, sharing their knowledge, skills, and practice with Sovereign Hill staff and Narmbool Board Committee members.

Wiyn Murrup, meaning Fire Spirit, describes Wadawurrung burning practices used to care for Dja (Country). Developed over millennia, these practices can help renew and heal Country, support biodiversity, sustain native plants and animals, and build more resilient ecosystems.

The burn provided an important opportunity to learn on Country and deepen our understanding of how Wadawurrung knowledge and cultural practice continue to care for this landscape.

As history tells it, new technologies were developed on the goldfields to process the vast amounts of gold-bearing quartz brought up from the mines.

This ten-head stamper battery worked tirelessly, crushing the quartz into smaller pieces before it passed over a vibrating concentrating table below, where the heavier gold was separated from the lighter rock and dirt. With many demonstrations across the day, it's worth a look inside!
