We have three levels of bands available catering for different entry points in experience and ability. Band History:

The Ballarat Memorial Concert Band was started in about 1920 by Private H.J. Norman McWilliam. At its inception the band was restricted to Returned Soldiers and by 1924 had developed into a highly skilled and successful brass band. In later years membership was extended to encompas

s servicemen and women from both wars. At this time the name of the band was changed to the Ballarat Memorial Soldiers Sailors and Airman Band (BSS&A). The BSS&A Band was Ballarat’s premier marching and performing brass band and was often in demand by festival organizers in and around Ballarat. In 1987, due to declining numbers, membership was opened all musicians and the band was developed into a concert band. As a reflection of this development, the name of the band was changed to the Ballarat Memorial Concert Band (BMCB). The Ballarat Memorial Concert Band, and its associated Developmental Band, is a non-profit community organization. The band plays most types of music including marches, classical, jazz and popular styles and regularly participates in concerts, community festivals and events. In keeping with its marching band heritage, the BMCB often participates in local marches and parades.

Tomorrow evening 5.00pm
Come and find out more about our new Development Program for beginners of all ages!

New Beginner Program for Brass, Woodwind and Percussion.

2026 will see the next step in the evolution of our development band. This year we are restructuring the program to better support people at the beginning of their exploration of music.

🎶 In 2026 we will be running a 20 week beginner program for brass, woodwind and percussion. It is a structured program with achievable measure able goals written and overseen by a qualified practicing music educator. We have instruments available to hire as well as all the music and resources you’ll need. If you have your own instrument feel free to bring that along as well! This program will benefit those who have always wished to learn, learnt a long time ago or wish to pick up a new instrument.

🗓️ Monday 23 March will be an information and get to know you session, as well as allocating instruments and resources for a Term 2 start.

📱If you are interested please contact us via Facebook or just turn up! If you need more information call Amanda on 0421766536.

Huge thanks to the City of Ballarat Council for their support.
Ballarat Memorial Concert Band was awarded a Community Impact Grant to renovate our percussion room and Library. Also thanks to Jon Flind and Tim Scott for doing such a great job.
We can now easily fit and safely store our instruments and library of music scores. It has made a huge difference and we are very grateful.

Our first week back for 2026 was fantastic! Last night Amanda Holley stepped up as our MD for the Memorial Band whilst Andrew takes a year of leave.
On Monday, Kerry Trounson took the reins for the Barkly Street Concert Band for this year.(We'll get some photos of Barkly in action next week.)
We also welcomed some new players into both bands.
Thanks Zoom Beck for these great photos from last night.

We welcome beginners and have instruments available to hire. Rehearsals resume in February.

"Learning music can open opportunities to meet new people and make new friends.
"Whether you're self-taught, or have formal lessons, look for a community music group or choir where you can enjoy making music in a supportive social setting," Jill says.
"It's so much more fun than practising in isolation."

You can pick up an instrument or learn to sing at any age. Here are some helpful tips from experts and ABC Classic audience members to get you started.
