Happy International W***e$ Day!
"The 2nd June is International W***e$ Day in commemoration of the storming and takeover of a church in Lyon, France in 1975 by s*x workers and their allies.

The action was in protest against the increasing number of arrests of street based s*x workers, the relentless police harassment of those workers and the lack of interest shown by police in solving murders and other crimes committed against s*x workers.

The s*x workers and supporters in Lyons, challenged the police to come and arrest anybody who they could identify as a s*x worker in the church, making the point that s*x workers are ordinary people. At the protest predominately women with their children, made a strong stance as a direct action, that demonstrated that women doing a job such as s*x work, cannot be told apart from other women, who do other work.

Inspired by this action and in reclaiming derogatory terms of that period “whore” against women as s*x workers, s*x workers all over the world started organizing, giving rise to the modern-day s*x workers rights movement. W***e is a term that s*x workers have reclaimed diligently and no longer is the term a slur. International W***e$ Day for s*x workers is pride."

Today, on LGBTIQ+ Domestic Violence Awareness Day, we stand with LGBTQIA+ people and communities affected by domestic, family and s*xual violence.

Everyone deserves to feel safe, respected and supported in their relationships, regardless of s*xuality, gender identity or expression. Sadly, LGBTQIA+ people can face unique barriers when seeking help, including discrimination, fear of not being believed, or lack of inclusive services.

In the Northern Territory, support is available. 💜

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Darwin, in person or in spirit from afar, for this year’s Candlelight Memorial, and to all those who engaged with and supported events across Australia. 🕯️

Community members came together to remember the lives lost to HIV/AIDS, honour people living with HIV, and reflect on the strength, resilience and advocacy that continues within our communities.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, shared stories, wrote tribute names and messages, placed flowers and candles, and took time to be present together in remembrance and solidarity. Your support helps continue important conversations around HIV awareness, community connection and ending stigma.

As we reflect on this year’s memorial, we also remind our communities of the importance of Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). People living with HIV who maintain an undetectable viral load through effective treatment cannot pass HIV on to others. This message continues to change lives, reduce stigma and support healthier communities through knowledge, treatment and care.

Unfortunately, due to rain, the Alice Springs Todd Mall Markets stall and event was cancelled. We are currently exploring options to attend an upcoming market day with our community stall so we can continue sharing messages of remembrance, hope and awareness with the Alice Springs community.

NTAHC also extends sincere thanks to our Board, staff, members, patron, funders, stakeholders and community partners who continue to support this work across the Northern Territory.

We’re setting up now for tonight’s International AIDS Candlelight Memorial at Nightcliff Foreshore. 🕯️

You’ll find us closer to the jetty on the left-hand side. Food stalls are open nearby, so feel free to grab dinner and join us as the sun sets for an evening of remembrance, reflection and community connection.

This year’s gathering is intentionally a little less formal, a chance for all of us to simply be present together, honour those we have lost to HIV/AIDS, acknowledge people living with HIV, and reflect on over 40 years of advocacy, health promotion and community care in the Northern Territory.

Battery tea lights and flowers will be available. Community members are invited to take a candle, write a tribute message, or place flowers into the ocean during sunset reflection.

Everyone is welcome.

Today we pause to remember the lives lost to HIV/AIDS, honour the strength of people living with HIV, and stand together as community for the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial. 🕯️

Across Darwin and Alice Springs today, NTAHC communities are coming together in reflection, remembrance and solidarity.

For more than 40 years, our communities have led with advocacy, health promotion, care and connection supporting people living with HIV and continuing the work to reduce stigma and strengthen community wellbeing across the Northern Territory.

We acknowledge and thank all people living with HIV for their courage, leadership and resilience. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the many people who continue to support this work, including the NTAHC Board, staff, members, patron, funders, stakeholders and wider community.

Whether you join us in person today or take a quiet moment wherever you are, we invite you to reflect, remember and stand together in hope.
