HOW MANY MORE HEADLINES DO WE NEED?

It feels like every time I open a newspaper lately, there is another story about children, young people and our child protection system.

A 13-year-old boy, Budda Spencer, whose family and multiple agencies were desperately worried about him, died after sleeping in a skip bin — while the coronial inquest now examines what happened in the years, weeks and days before his death.

Young people who have grown up in residential care describing a system that needs fundamental change.

Aboriginal carers warning that history risks repeating itself, while Aboriginal children remain profoundly over-represented in care.

Stories about an overwhelmed system, workforce pressures, residential care, children needing family placements, carers needing greater support and young people asking — again and again — to actually be heard.

And at the same time, there ARE people trying to change things.

There is investment in family-based care.
There are efforts to find families and strengthen kinship options.
There is work happening to redesign residential care with young people at the table.
There are family group conferences keeping children safely connected with family.
There are people inside and outside the system who turn up every single day determined to make it better.

But we cannot allow positive reform to make us comfortable.

Because behind every statistic is a child.

A child wondering where they will sleep tonight.

A child packing another bag.

A child meeting another worker.

A child moving into another house.

A child wondering whether this one will be home.

A child who doesn’t need us to spend another decade discussing what a better system might look like.

They need us to build it.

This Friday, during National Child Protection Week, hundreds of people will come together at our Watch Them Lead breakfast.

There will be 4,902 keys in the room.

Each one representing a child.

Not a case number.
Not a placement.
Not a notification.
Not a statistic.

A child.

And perhaps amongst all these headlines, reports, inquiries, reforms and conversations, there is one question we should keep coming back to:

If this were our child, would what we are offering them be good enough?

If the answer is no, then our work isn’t finished.

Actually, I think it means we are only just getting started.

SUNDAY MARKET CREW… we need MORE HANDS! 🙌🥦🍊🍎

This is what Sunday afternoons look like for our slightly crazy, very hardworking Puddle Jumpers market crew. 😂

There’s lifting.
There’s loading.
There’s unloading.
There’s Tetris-level truck packing.
There’s an extraordinary amount of fruit and veg.
And apparently there’s also time for the occasional photo bomb. 😂📸

Every Sunday our volunteers head to the markets to rescue fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste, load it into our truck and bring it back to our warehouse — ready to make its way out to people who really need it.

And we could REALLY use some more hands!

🥕 11:30am – meet at our Kilkenny warehouse
🍎 12:30pm onwards – help collect at the markets
🚚 Around 3:30pm – back to the warehouse to unload
🙌 Usually finished by about 4:30pm

You don’t have to commit to every Sunday. Even helping occasionally makes a massive difference.

Come get a little dirty, lift a few boxes, have a laugh with this bunch and help us rescue an incredible amount of food at the same time. 💚

Who wants to join the Sunday Market Crew?! 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♂️

Comment below or send us a message and we’ll get you involved!

Warning: excessive smiling, celery and terrible jokes may occur. 😂🥬

The legendary Iris and Lauren from Underdale High! 💛

They kindly donated the leftover cakes from a school function, making sure they didn’t go to waste and could instead bring a little sweetness to the families we support. 🧁

We are so lucky to have such thoughtful people in our community. Thank you, Iris and Lauren—you’re absolute legends! 🙂

Our National Child Protection Week – WATCH THEM LEAD Breakfast is almost here! 🦋💙

And look what has arrived! 😍

Every single person attending our breakfast will receive one of our special Watch Them Lead butterfly pins — a little pin with a very big reminder of why we’re all coming together.

🦋 Every child deserves to be safe, supported, heard and believed in.

Wear it on Friday. Wear it afterwards. Let it be a reminder that protecting children isn’t something we talk about for just one week of the year — it takes all of us. It takes a village.

This Friday morning is going to be something pretty special. Young voices. Powerful stories. 4,902 keys. And a room full of people who believe we can do better for children and young people.

Such a lovely afternoon speaking at fruitshareadelaide AGM. 🍎🍊🍋💚

There is SO much similarity between Fruit Share Adelaide and Puddle Jumpers, and today really reminded me that from little things, big things grow.

Fruit Share starts with something incredibly simple — fruit and vegetables growing in backyards and gardens across Adelaide that might otherwise be left, wasted or discarded.

Someone picks it.
Someone collects it.
Someone sorts it.
Someone transports it.
Someone shares it.

And then organisations like Puddle Jumpers get to put that beautiful fresh produce into the hands of children, families and people in our community who genuinely need it.

That’s the village. ❤️

It’s not one organisation doing everything. It’s a whole bunch of good people doing their little bit, and when all those little bits connect, suddenly they become something pretty bloody powerful.

Less food waste. 🍏
More fresh food reaching people. 🥕
People helping people.
Communities looking after communities.

What a brilliant charity Fruit Share Adelaide is, and what a collaboration we are so grateful to be part of.

Thank you for inviting me along today to share a little about Puddle Jumpers and why what you do matters so much at our end of the chain.

This is exactly what we mean when we talk about building a village. 💚

From a piece of fruit that may have gone to waste… to food on someone’s table.

Little things. Big things. A whole village of people doing good. 🍎❤️
