This time of year can be very overwhelming for animal rescues. It is kitten season because cats keep on having babies. We all try to prioritise animals in care to reduce their length of stay. We all try to help people when we can.

Many people in rescue work day jobs, have families and operate rescue work, websites, fundraising, social media and communications in their spare time. Rescue is unpaid work.

Rescue work is fun and rewarding, but it is challenging when we receive passive/aggressive messages and threats of k*lling a pet because rescue does not have an open door policy.

If you are struggling to rehome your cat, below are some resources:

🐈Found kittens
Neonatal kittens need their mum to survive. In those first few weeks, mums milk provides vital antibodies, nutrients and building blocks for immunity. If mum is a community cat or unsocialised pet cat, she will not be present when you are around. Please leave the kittens alone or move them to a safe space. They can be housed in a cardboard box with a blanket or towel, and access for mum to get in and out.

More information: https://www.alleycat.org/community-cat-care/finding-kittens-outdoors/ (note – TNR is illegal in SA)

🐈Adult cats
Adult cats do have a longer length of stay in rescue, and rescue has a finite capacity especially during kitten season. As the owner of the cat, you are the cat’s best advocate. There are free social media pages to promote your cat for rehoming. Use good quality images, a description, likes and dislikes, current food brand, veterinary work, medical issues and behaviour disclosures. Request the potential adopter to come and meet your pet.

On our travels to the United States, the financial recognition towards Veterans was very visual. Discounts were offered to serving and discharged veterans in almost every place that we visited, such as eateries, ticketing, barber shops and even priority boarding when travelling. (Mia and Andrew)

The Board at Adelaide Pets Alive! acknowledges and recognises the service and sacrifice that our service men and women make to serve and protect our nation.

We also acknowledge the challenges that Defence families and Veterans face, both during service and upon discharge.

Adelaide Pets Alive! also recognises the human-animal bond. This bond can offer profound impacts on our emotional wellbeing. Interacting with an animal can alleviate anxiety, stress and depression. Animals can also provide love and support during difficult times.

Adelaide Pets Alive! will offer Defence families and Veterans located in Adelaide a heavily discounted adoption fee for a kitten.

We have applied a $100 discount to kitten adoptions for Defence families and Veterans. 🪖

The adoption process remains the same.
Our policy for adoption and for Defence families and Veterans can be found on our Resource page on our website. https://www.adelaidepetsalive.org.au/resources

✨Little bubs✨

Little bubs and mum cat are doing very well.

We were notified about a community cat who had been taken in by a caring man. Mum cat was pregnant and had given birth. We have supplied mum cat with Royal Canin Mother & Babycat wet and dry, a comfy enclosure and we are supporting her owner.

When it is time and safe Adelaide Pets Alive! will pay for mum cat to be desexed.

Adelaide Pets Alive! very much appreciates the early notification as it helps us to manage intake.
