Last Friday, we were proud to attend the Department for Child Protection SA’s 2026 South Australian Child Protection & Family Support Awards as a Silver Sponsor, joining others across the sector to celebrate the people, programs and partnerships supporting children, young people and families.

The awards recognise the achievements of children and young people, carers, volunteers, staff and organisations across South Australia’s child protection and family support sector.

It was wonderful to see the contributions of so many people recognised. Congratulations to all the award winners, nominees and finalists.

Today is World Mental Health Day!

October is Mental Health Month, a time to pause, check in with ourselves and those around us, and reflect on how we can look after our mental health and wellbeing. A simple conversation, a kind message or taking the time to listen can make a meaningful difference.

This year’s theme, Together We Thrive, recognises that while life can feel overwhelming, connection remains one of the most powerful ways to support our mental health and wellbeing.

At SYC, we know the importance of support and community. Today, take a moment to connect with someone who matters to you and remind them they’re not alone.

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program offers FREE language, literacy, numeracy, and digital literacy training to help job seekers build confidence, gain new skills, and improve employability.

Delivered by SYC in the Murray and South East region, with sites in Berri, Murray Bridge and Mt Gambier, the SEE Program provides flexible, face-to-face learning tailored to each individual’s needs.

Some great things have been happening across our Workforce Australia – Transition to Work program in Queensland!

Over the past few months, participants have started new jobs and traineeships, enrolled in further study and explored different industries and career pathways.

Hendrix, Maia, Gorethy and Jake have all recently taken steps towards employment or further study, while Maleta and Danielle had the chance to explore the automotive industry during a visit to Volvo Queensland.

It’s been great to see our participants give things a go, build their confidence and take steps towards what’s next for them.

SYC and Workabout, a Department for Education program, recently welcomed students, employers, educators and community organisations to the second Next Steps Aboriginal Youth Expo, creating a space where young people could explore what their future could look like beyond the classroom.

Designed to connect Aboriginal students with opportunities in employment, education and training, the expo brought together more than 55 organisations from a diverse range of industries.

"When young people can connect directly with employers, educators and industry professionals, it helps bring future opportunities to life.” Scott Whitmore, National Partnerships Manager at SYC.

The success of this year's event highlights the importance of bringing education, industry and community together to support Aboriginal young people as they navigate life after school.

Meet Jai, who has signed up for a school-based Plumbing Apprenticeship with Fulwood Contracting!

While completing his school studies, Jai will gain hands-on experience in the plumbing industry, developing his knowledge and skills as he takes his first steps towards a career in the trades.

Our Field Officer, Tina, was there to support Jai through his sign-up and will continue working alongside Jai and his employer throughout his apprenticeship.

It’s fantastic to see Jai getting a head start in the industry while completing school. We look forward to following his progress as he builds his skills and experience.
