Today marks the start of National Reconciliation Week.

Each year, this week invites all Australians to reflect on our shared histories, cultures and achievements and consider the role we each play in reconciliation.

This year’s theme, All In, is a clear call to action. Reconciliation is not the responsibility of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples alone. It requires all of us to step forward and be part of the change.

At SYC, that means continuing to support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, creating culturally safe workplaces and working alongside communities in ways that are led by and responsive to them.

Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us.

Today on National Sorry Day, we remember and acknowledge the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were forcibly removed from their families and communities, known as the Stolen Generations.

We recognise the strength and resilience of Stolen Generations survivors and reflect on the ongoing impacts still felt by families and communities today.

This year marks 29 years since the Bringing Them Home report was tabled in Parliament, sharing the truth of the Stolen Generations and calling for national action and healing.

This year’s theme, ‘From Sorry to Action’, reminds us that acknowledgement alone is not enough.

At SYC, we stand in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise that reconciliation requires ongoing commitment, understanding and meaningful change.

At SYC, we know strong communities are built by people who show up for others. This National Volunteer Week, we’ve been proud to celebrate the volunteers and placement students who generously give their time, skills and care across our programs and services.

From supporting others to creating welcoming spaces and sharing their knowledge and experience, their impact is felt across SYC in so many ways.

Thank you to every volunteer and placement student who continues to make a difference.

“What I enjoy most about this work is seeing the direct impact that genuine support can have on someone’s life.”

This year marks 10 years at SYC for Sandra, Site Manager at one of our Workforce Australia sites in Victoria, a milestone that reflects her long-standing commitment to the people and communities she works with.

With almost 20 years of experience in the employment services industry, Sandra is passionate about supporting people to overcome barriers, build confidence and move into sustainable employment.

Over the years, Sandra has supported participants through significant life transitions, including redundancy, while also mentoring and supporting staff to achieve positive outcomes.

We had a fantastic time at the North Eastern Nunga Tag Carnival and Expo!

Last week on Kaurna Country, more than 600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander high school students came together alongside families, schools, community members and organisations from across Adelaide and surrounding regions.

The event celebrated sport, culture and connection through a round robin Nunga Tag tournament and community expo.

The expo created an opportunity for students to connect with schools, services and organisations, while learning more about the supports and opportunities available within community.

It was great to be part of such a positive and welcoming day and to see so many people coming together.

Happy National Volunteer Week!

At SYC, volunteers play an important role in how we work with people and communities. Over the past year, our volunteers have contributed more than 4,000 hours across our programs and services, making a meaningful difference.

This year’s theme, ‘Your Year to Volunteer’, recognises the valuable contributions volunteers make every day and encourages more people across Australia to get involved in ways that work for them.

Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing stories that highlight the impact of our volunteers and the difference they make across SYC.

Thank you to everyone who volunteers with us. We appreciate all that you do.

In the 2024-25 financial year, we supported more than 7,000 people to gain employment.

National Careers Week Australia recognises the important role career development plays in helping people explore opportunities, build confidence and shape meaningful futures.

At SYC, we support people at every stage of their career journey through employment services, education and training and apprenticeship support. From helping someone prepare for their first job, to supporting people to build skills and confidence, we believe everyone deserves the opportunity to pursue a meaningful career.

We’re excited to share that SYC’s Carter Street development in Ridgehaven is quickly taking shape, marking an important step in increasing access to safe and affordable housing in our community.

This project is transforming a single residential block into six architecturally designed townhouses, helping to increase housing supply in Adelaide’s north-east.

This is SYC’s most significant housing investment in over a decade and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating more stable housing options for the community.
