Today we’re celebrating Wear It Purple Day!

This year’s theme, Colours of Courage, celebrates the many different forms of courage shown by LGBTQIA+SB young people, allies and communities every day.

Courage can look like speaking up, standing up for others or creating change. It can also be found in quieter moments, like being yourself, asking for support or simply standing beside someone.

At SYC, we’re proud to celebrate the courage, diversity and individuality of LGBTQIA+SB young people and to help create safe and inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, valued and supported.

This National Skills Week, we’ve been celebrating the opportunities that come from building skills, confidence and having the courage to give something new a go.

For Georgia, her apprenticeship has helped turn a lifelong love of cars into a career.

When she discovered car wrapping, she knew it was something she wanted to pursue. With support from SYC Apprenticeship Support Officer Dina, Georgia has built her skills and confidence along the way.

Last year, she stepped outside her comfort zone to compete at WorldSkills Australia in Brisbane, finishing just half a point behind third place.

Now, she’s preparing to take on WorldSkills again. Her advice to other apprentices? Give it a go.

“It may be overwhelming and difficult, but you have absolutely nothing to lose. It’s a great experience.”

Our team recently joined the community housing sector at the 2026 Community Housing Industry Association of South Australia Excellence in Community Housing Awards.

It was a wonderful evening celebrating the people, teams and projects making a difference across community housing.

We’re proud to celebrate two achievements for SYC, with our Bridge Program taking home the Leading Community Development Award.

We also want to give a huge congratulations to Brooke from SYC's HYPA Housing, who was named runner-up for the Inspirational Team Member Award.

This National Skills Week, we’re celebrating the difference the right support can make.

For Deanne, Foundation Skills Tutoring has helped build her confidence as she works towards a Diploma in Nursing.

Algebra, measurement and geometry were areas where Deanne didn’t feel confident. Her tutor Sandra used a hands-on, ‘learn by doing’ approach, with practical examples tailored to the way Deanne learns best.

With Sandra’s support, Deanne became more comfortable working through mathematical problems and developed strategies she can use in her ongoing studies.

Deanne is continuing to build her skills and confidence as she works towards her future goals in nursing.

Congratulations Hannah!

Hannah has successfully completed her Certificate I in Skills for Vocational Pathways, building her confidence, independence and skills along the way.

When Hannah first came to SYC for a Foundation Skills course, she was nervous about the training process. With support from her trainer Cherie, she became more comfortable and confident in completing her work independently.

After completing all 11 units across learning, reading, writing, numeracy and digital literacy, Hannah is now looking ahead to her next goals, including film studies, casual work and exploring further study so she can support other people living with disability.

This National Skills Week, with the theme ‘Life Changing’, we’re celebrating achievements like Hannah’s and the opportunities that can come from building skills, confidence and independence.

We’re proud to celebrate Chris Matheson, SYC’s State Employment Activity Coordinator for Victoria, who has been named a finalist for Employment Consultant of the Year at the 2026 National Employment Services Association Ltd (NESA) Awards for Excellence.

With more than 10 years’ experience in employment services, Chris is passionate about helping people build confidence, overcome barriers and recognise their potential.

“The greatest reward isn’t simply the employment outcome. It’s knowing that I’ve played a small part in helping someone change the direction of their life and feel proud of what they have achieved.”

On Friday evening, The Foundry by SYC proudly launched its annual SALA Festival exhibition, Our Voice, Our Way, showcasing artwork created by young people across a number of SYC programs.

We were honoured to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Frances Adamson AC, Governor of South Australia, who joined artists, supporters and community members to celebrate the exhibition.

"The thing I love about The Foundry is that you can be someone who's been here for years or someone who has been here for weeks. Either way, you are always welcome."

"For those of you who are using your voices and doing it your way, I want to congratulate you for doing it. I want to encourage you to keep doing it, and I want to encourage you to do it always."

SYC Chief Executive Officer Jenny Hall reflected on the significance of the exhibition:

"The exhibition is a wonderful celebration of the creativity, talent and perspectives of young people across a number of SYC programs. Through their artwork, they are sharing their stories in a way that encourages connection, understanding and conversation across our community."

"It is incredibly rewarding to see so many people come together to support these young artists. Events like this strengthen community connections, raise awareness and provide opportunities to celebrate the strengths and talents of young people."

SYC Chair Arabella Branson highlighted the importance of creating meaningful opportunities for self-expression:

"This exhibition highlights the importance of ensuring young people have opportunities to express themselves and have their voices heard. Seeing community members, supporters and partners come together to celebrate these artists demonstrates the positive impact that can be achieved when young people are given a platform to share their experiences, perspectives and talents."

Talking all things careers, apprenticeships and inclusive employment has been a big focus for our teams over the past few weeks.

Our Apprenticeship Support Services, Inclusive Employment Australia and Workplace Inclusion Support teams have been connecting with students, employers and local communities through a range of events.

From the Fleurieu Careers Expo and the Subject and Pathways Expo at St Martins Lutheran College, to this year’s Outdoors Victoria Conference, we’ve had great conversations about apprenticeship and traineeship pathways, career opportunities and practical ways to build more inclusive workplaces.
