Next Meeting: Grafting Night

This is our annual meeting where we provide hundreds of heritage fruit varieties and rootstocks for sale at low cost to the SA public. Note that generally we are not selling grafted trees but the material for people to graft their own. The scions (cuttings to be grafted) come from our extensive collection in our arboretum. In addition to these, there will be grafting supplies (knives, tape etc.) on sale, advice on varieties and small group demonstrations of how to graft.

Grafting is not difficult and opens a world where people can propagate their own trees rather than spend large amounts buying trees. Heritage varieties provide many more options including flavour and aspects like disease resistance and early or later fruiting. For example, we have peaches and plums that fruit in early November and those fruit in April.

We offer scions for apples, apricots, cherries, peaches, pears, nectarines, plums, quinces, almonds. We also will have cuttings that can be propagated in soil (do not need to be grafted) for figs, pomegranates, grapes. Costs are $2 per scion, $4 per cutting and rootstocks at $12. To graft you need at least one scion and rootstock. For under $15 people can graft up a heritage fruit tree! Members receive a 50% discount on the scion/cuttings and similar for rootstocks (membership is only $35 per year).

🌸 Desert Pea Garden Feature Competition 🌸
Be part of the Desert Pea Festival | 7 November 2026

Celebrate the iconic Sturt Desert Pea by getting creative and helping transform the Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden into a vibrant display of community-made garden art!

We’re inviting local clubs, schools, families and community groups to take part by creating a Garden Feature inspired by the desert pea. We can’t wait to see colourful, imaginative pieces showcased throughout the garden on festival day.

✨ Your creation details:

Maximum size: up to 1 metre square
Display style: place directly on the ground, or attach to low garden posts so designs can cascade beautifully
Materials: natural materials only (e.g. crochet/knitted wool, cotton, felt, natural twine, etc.)
