Branching out/the Forest Podcast: New ways of doing things

🎧 Branching out: the Forest Podcast — Season 3, Episode 2: "New ways of doing things"

Innovation is essential to keep forest-based systems healthy, resilient, and sustainable. The world's forests face growing pressures from climate-related stresses and rising demand for wood and non-wood products. Therefore, we must continue investing in science and innovation in the forest sector. Meaningful innovation must also flow in both directions between the Global North and the Global South.

Scientific research provides the evidence base required to ensure that these forest innovations are effective, inclusive, and sustainable.

Effective communication is a crucial enabler, connecting scientific research with policy, practice, and society to ensure that knowledge translates into meaningful action.

This is the focus of the IUFRO Task Force on Scaling-Up Science-based Forest Sector Innovation, which aims to create a more enabling environment for forest sector innovation by:

• Raising awareness
• Enhancing education and communication
• Fostering research
• Developing partnerships
• providing policy support

In this episode, we talk with IUFRO Task Force co-leads Lyndall Bull (University of Melbourne) and Rajat Panwar (Oregon State University) about the importance of scaling up science-based innovation in the forest sector. We are also joined by Leila Rossa Mouawad (IUFRO) as our co-host!

Happening tomorrow - the autumn session of the "Contested Forests Talks" series:

🌲 How care divides and connects: On forest conflicts and transformations in a German upland region

🗓 29 October 2026
⏰ 11:00 UTC (please use the Time Converter at the event page)
📍 Online (Zoom) – please register below to receive the link

In this talk, speaker Anna Brietzke (Institute for Social-Ecological Research (ISOE), Germany) explores local forest conflicts through a critical care perspective. Drawing on mediated round table discussions from a case study in a German upland region, they examine how different human actors engage with and actively shape the forest as a social-ecological system. They highlight how the four actors under consideration regard their practices as forms of care and argue that the roots of certain conflicts lie precisely in these care practices. Finally, they consider the potential of a care perspective to bridge divides and facilitate dialogue between actors, particularly in conflict settings.

This session is part of ongoing effort in Research Group 6.05.00 Forest Conflict Management to build a global platform for dialogue on forest‑related conflicts, their cultural and political dimensions, and pathways to more just and sustainable forest futures.

🎧 Branching out: the Forest Podcast — Season 3, Episode 1: "Breaking Down Silos"

Bioeconomy goes far beyond simply producing bio-based products. It has evolved into a holistic concept that connects how we produce, use, and value biological resources with broader sustainability goals.

Transitioning from a fossil-based, linear economy to a circular and regenerative bioeconomy requires more than technological advances alone. It also depends on social, institutional, and organizational innovation, as well as cross-sector collaboration that breaks down silos and fosters integrated solutions.

The forest-based sector has a vital role to play in this transition. While much of the attention has focused on replacing fossil-based resources with wood and wood-based products through more efficient and innovative use of wood, forests offer far more than timber, cellulose, and carbon sequestration. Their contributions are diverse, multifunctional, and essential to sustainable development.

This is the focus of the IUFRO Task Force on Building an Integrated Vision of the Forest-Based Sector within a Bioeconomy, which is working to develop a science-based, inclusive, and integrated vision that also reflects the diversity of regional contexts around the world.

In this episode, we talk with IUFRO Task Force co-leads Živojinović (BOKU University) and Vargas Carpintero (University of Hohenheim) about fostering an inclusive dialogue on the forest-based bioeconomy. Happy to have González (IUFRO) as a co-host!
