Donau Soja – die Kern-Ziele

Basis für das Projekt sind die Förderung und Forcierung des regionalen Soja-Anbaus nach klar definierten Qualitätskriterien, sowie die dafür notwendige Ausweitung der Infrastruktur. Im Vorder¬grund stehen dabei:

- Förderung des Gentechnik-freien Sojaanbaus und der Verarbeitung in der Donauregion für Österreich und Europa – unter dem Markenzeichen Donau Soja;
- Aufbau von verlässlichen Liefer- und Wertschöpfungsketten durch die Mitgliedsunternehmen, als Beitrag zur europäischen Eiweißversorgung;
- Führung eines geförderten Züchtungs,- Forschungs- und Kontrollprogramms für Gentechnik-freies Soja-Saatgut und Soja-Pflanzenschutzkonzepten für den Donauraum. Darüber hinaus hat sich der Verein Donau Soja vielfältige weitere Ziele gesteckt:

- Regionale Wertschöpfung, Gentechnik-Freiheit, Nachhaltigkeit und Rückverfolgbarkeit als wesent¬liche Eck¬pfeiler der Donau Soja (Details dazu: siehe Kriterienkatalog);
- Anbau ausschließlich auf bereits vorhandenen Ackerbau- und Brachflächen im Donauraum, unter ausdrücklichem Ausschluss von Naturschutzgebieten und anderen Schutzzonen;
- Etablierung der Donau Soja und ihrer Produktionskriterien als europaweit anerkannte Qualitätsmarke;
- Beitrag zur Reduktion des CO2-Fußabdrucks bei Sojaprodukten und Fleisch – durch die Förder¬ung europäischer Eiweißträger;
- Systematische Information und Einbindung der Öffentlichkeit sowie aller relevanten Stake¬holder aus Wirt¬schaft, NGOs und Politik;
- Förderung begleitender Forschung im Bereich Wirtschaft und Ökologie zur Erfolgsmessung und Evaluierung des Programms.

🥚 Celebrating World Egg Day with a purpose

Yesterday, on World Egg Day, the Austrian Poultry Federation (Geflügelwirtschaft Österreich) and AMA Marketing held a charity egg-cooking event at Vienna’s Naschmarkt in support of Caritas Gruft.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of World Egg Day. Donau Soja CEO Aurélie Tournan joined the event, because Donau Soja has a special connection to eggs in Austria: since 2013, all conventional shell eggs sold in Austrian retail have come from hens fed with Europe Soya-certified soya.

And the feed matters to the eggs’ footprint: According to a study by BOKU Vienna, eggs from hens fed with feed containing soya certified to the Europe Soya Standard had a 40% lower CO2 footprint than the reference eggs used in the study.

What hens eat can affect the climate footprint of their eggs. A study by BOKU Vienna found that eggs from hens fed feed containing Europe Soya-certified soya had a 40% lower CO2 footprint than the reference eggs used in the study.
Europe Soya certification stands for European origin, non-GM soya and deforestation-free supply chains.

At SPAR Österreich, look for the Europe Soya label on products from the own-brand ranges SPAR Feine Küche, SPAR Schaut drauf and S-Budget.

Summer recap: EUDR readiness starts with practical steps. 💪

Earlier this summer, Donau Soja colleague Matthias Mohrs visited BAG Ölmühle GMBH in Austria. They discussed how companies in the soya value chain can prepare for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), including supplier onboarding, traceability, risk analysis and internal processes.

Matthias also toured the mill and gained a valuable insight into day-to-day soya processing. 🌱

Donau Soja continues to support companies with EUDR implementation, from understanding the requirements to identifying practical next steps.

⚠️ According to the European Commission, Europe imports 94% of the soya it needs.
The EU is largely self-sufficient in many key agricultural products, including cereals, pork and poultry. Soya tells a different story.
📊 Only 8% of EU soya demand is covered by domestic production. The rest depends on imports, making Europe’s feed supply vulnerable to disruptions in global trade.
This matters across the food system. Soya is an important protein-rich feed material for livestock, particularly in the pork and poultry sectors.
➡️ Building a more resilient European protein supply requires action on three fronts:
🌱 Growing more soya and other protein crops in Europe
🥗 Promoting more balanced and sustainable diets
🐄 Improving livestock feeding practices

🌍 From regional cooperation to national climate guidance

📍 From 21 to 23 September 2026, Donau Soja participated in the final workshop on the Guidelines for adapting Serbian agriculture to climate change, held in Šabac, Serbia.

Earlier this year, Donau Soja worked with stakeholders and expert working groups to develop a Regional Action Plan (RAP) for the future of soya production in the Balkans under changing climate conditions. 🌱

The plan is currently being finalised. Its recommendations on adapting soya production to climate change were reflected in Serbia’s national guidelines. This shows how regional cooperation can support national policy and strengthen climate adaptation work across the Balkans.

At the workshop, Emilija Stefanovic from Donau Soja presented our regional work on the future of soya production in the Balkans. She also highlighted the importance of cooperation between value-chain actors, public authorities and partners across the region. 🤝
