Access Chapter 2 Promoting and Protecting the Human Rights of Women and LGBTI+ People in their Diversity.

A world where women and Le***an, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) people in their diversity have equal access to services and human rights. Access Chapter 2’s (AC2) vision and mission is built from the women’s and LGBTI centred approach, and seeks to ensure civil society sector’s substantive participation in civil, political and socio-economic rights as enshrined in the bill of rights.

⚖️ Access Chapter 2 Monitors Sexual Offences Case at Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court

Today, Access Chapter 2 monitored a sexual offences case involving a young girl who was r***d at the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court. The matter remains at the trial stage, with the State continuing to lead evidence.

During today’s proceedings, Dr Omar Faziel Habib, a psychiatrist, took the stand as a State expert witness and provided evidence relating to the psychological assessment and impact of the matter on the young complainant.

The matter was part-heard and postponed to 29 September 2026, when the complainant’s mother is expected to take the stand and give evidence.

Access Chapter 2 will continue to monitor the proceedings and document key developments, while advocating for the survivor’s rights, dignity, safety and best interests throughout the legal process.

Justice must be pursued with dignity, accountability and care.

From 1–3 September 2026, our team will be monitoring a r**e case involving a minor young woman at the Port Shepstone Magistrate Court. Our presence supports responsible observation of proceedings and reinforces the importance of justice that is fair, accessible, and responsive to survivors.

Access Chapter 2 (AC2) convened an Advanced Round-Table on SOGIESC Awareness and Human Sexuality Competency with officials from the National Department of Home Affairs.

Held at Protea Hotel Menlyn, Pretoria, the round-table provided a platform for open dialogue, knowledge-sharing and practical engagement on SOGIESC and human sexuality, with a focus on strengthening inclusive, rights-based and responsive public services.

The discussion engaged key legal and human rights issues affecting LGBTIQ+ persons within the Home Affairs context, including asylum and refugee-related matters, gender marker and identity documentation, and barriers experienced by LGBTIQ+ persons when accessing government services.

The round-table forms part of AC2’s ongoing work to strengthen institutional capacity, promote meaningful engagement with public institutions, and advance equality, dignity and human rights for LGBTIQ+ persons.
