WHEN MINES CLOSE, THE IMPACT REMAINS.

For many communities, mine closure does not mean recovery. Without proper rehabilitation and accountability, the impacts can continue for years.

Poor mine closure can leave communities living with:
β€’ Water contamination
β€’ Loss of livelihoods
β€’ Health impacts
β€’ Environmental degradation

Closure should not mean abandonment.

Read our latest report, *No More Ghost Towns*, and learn more about the environmental and socio-economic impacts of mine closure in Mpumalanga:

Did you know South Africa has an estimated 6,100 abandoned mines?

When mines close without proper rehabilitation, communities can continue living with the impacts for decades. Environmental damage, health concerns, unsafe land, and economic uncertainty do not disappear when operations end.

Mine closure is not the end.

Read CER’s latest report, *No More Ghost Towns*, and learn more about mine closure in Mpumalanga and what meaningful accountability could look like.

This , we celebrate the people, communities, and movements across Africa working to protect both people and the environment.

Environmental rights are human rights. ✊

Section 24 of the South African Constitution protects everyone’s right to an environment that is not harmful to their health or wellbeing and places a responsibility on the state to safeguard the environment for present and future generations.

At CER, we remain committed to advancing environmental justice and supporting communities to build a future rooted in accountability, participation, and care for both people and planet.

Because a thriving Africa depends on healthy people, healthy ecosystems, and decisions rooted in justice.
