As different industries continue to expand into the ocean, the role of fisherpeople is increasingly being pushed aside, threatening both their livelihoods and their deep connection to the sea.

Today, may we celebrate the resilience and resistance of fisherpeople who continue to protect the ocean while defending their cultures, communities, and ways of life. 🌊✊

Coastal Links and Masifundise support the Seawhale Cooperative's call for this matter to be heard as a matter of urgency. We further call on the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment to fast-track the cooperative's application for an exemption to harvest kelp in Concession Area 5 while the legal process continues.

🔗READ| On 15 May 2026, the Mthatha High Court delivered the judgment that the communities of Ward 28, Centane, have waited nearly a decade for. Judge President Zamani Nhlangulela made it unequivocally clear in the court order: the Minister, the Premier, and the Amathole District Municipality have failed the residents of Ward 28. They have breached their constitutional and statutory obligations by denying these communities access to something as basic and non-negotiable as water.

Today, fisherwomen are exploring climate change, its impact on fishing communities, and the ways communities are adapting and building resilience together. 🌊✨

The kickoff of the Women’s Exchange created a powerful space for women from fishing communities to connect, learn, and express themselves freely. Through shared stories and knowledge, women explored different fish preservation methods, discovered the diverse places and traditions each person comes from, and deepened their understanding of herbs and their many uses. The exchange continues to grow fisherwomen's confidence, knowledge, and sense of belonging.

This week, women in from fishing communities come together to exchange knowledge on how they navigate challenges and provide solutions that have assisted them in resisting systems created to oppress women.

Today we also explored the importance of including women in decision making processes and highlighting the importance of women's voices. ✊
