Where does reading happen?

From 4–6 September, Little Zebra Books will be at the LITASA Conference in Johannesburg, where Sino will be presenting on third spaces for reading.

We often think about reading as something that happens in a classroom, but children’s reading lives extend far beyond the school day.

Libraries; Community spaces; After-school programmes; Homes; Places where children can browse, listen to stories, share books and discover reading for themselves.

These “third spaces” can play an important role in creating opportunities for children to engage with books in ways that are different from formal classroom learning.

At LZB, this is an important part of the conversation we want to explore:

Where does reading happen?
What makes a space inviting for reading?
And how can we create more opportunities for children to read simply because they want to?

Sino will be sharing some of what we have been learning through Little Zebra Books’ work, while also listening to the experiences and ideas of others working across the literacy sector.

We’re looking forward to being part of the conversation at LITASA — and to bringing some of those conversations with us as September unfolds.

There is something magical about finding a book you don't want to put down.

The story that makes you laugh.
The character you want to meet again.
The page you can't wait to turn.

Literacy is about much more than being able to read words.

It's about discovering that reading can be something you want to do.

What book made you fall in love with reading?

What makes a child a reader?

Having someone who reads with you.
Having stories you want to hear.
Having books you can choose for yourself.
Seeing people around you reading.
Having books that reflect your language, culture and experiences.
And, importantly, having books available to you.

Access to books doesn't guarantee a love of reading.
But without access, the opportunity is limited from the start.

September is Literacy Month! A time to celebrate the power of reading and to reflect on what it takes to help every child become a reader.

At Little Zebra Books, we believe that learning to read is only part of the journey.

Children also need books that are engaging, age-appropriate, relevant and enjoyable, books that invite them to turn the next page, read the next story and discover the joy of reading.

This month, we'll be celebrating books, sharing voices from the communities we work with, and asking an important question:

What does it take to help a child become a reader?

Join us throughout September as we celebrate literacy and the books that help make it possible.

Today we're celebrating Nombulelo!
Although Nombulelo only joined the Little Zebra Books team last year as our Junior Designer, she has quickly become an invaluable part of our organisation.
From day one, she has impressed us with her creativity, strong work ethic, pride in everything she produces and eagerness to learn. Whether she's designing books, creating resources for our video training series or tackling a new creative challenge, Nombulelo quietly works behind the scenes to help bring our vision to life.
Her dedication reminds us that some of the biggest impact happens away from the spotlight—through faithful, consistent work done with excellence.
Thank you, Nombulelo, for the creativity, commitment and care you bring to Little Zebra Books every day. We can't wait to see all that you'll continue to create.

Behind every strong organisation is a group of people who believe deeply in its mission.
This Women's Month, we're celebrating the incredible women who serve on the Little Zebra Books Board.
💛 Minah, Kate, Charlene and Nomfundo each bring their own unique skills, experience and perspective, but they share one common purpose: a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading and the power of stories in their own language.
As Board members, they provide strategic guidance, thoughtful governance and unwavering encouragement, helping Little Zebra Books grow our impact and stay true to our vision. Their leadership strengthens not only our organisation, but also the communities and children we serve.
We are deeply grateful for the wisdom, generosity and commitment they bring to Little Zebra Books.
Thank you, Minah, Kate, Charlene and Nomfundo, for your leadership and your heart. 💛

We believe in the transformative power of reading. Books open a child's world to new experiences, new ways of living, and new ideas. Maya Angelou is proof of this truth as is every child being impacted by Little Zebra Books.

Today we're celebrating Jeni!

Jeni has been part of the Little Zebra Books story from the very beginning, and her passion for children's literacy continues to shape our work today.

Drawing on her extensive experience in language and literacy, Jeni generously volunteers her time to strengthen our programmes and support our team. She played a key role in introducing Little Zebra Books into reading clubs in Mozambique, helping our stories reach children beyond South Africa's borders.

Jeni is also one of our greatest ambassadors, enthusiastically sharing the Little Zebra Books vision wherever she goes. Thanks to her efforts, our books are now available on the Bloom Library platform, making them accessible to even more children, families and educators around the world.

Thank you, Jeni, for your wisdom, generosity and unwavering commitment to ensuring every child has the opportunity to discover the joy of reading in their own language.
