On Thursday, Little Zebra Books was honored to be selected as a grant recipient by The Community Chest of the Western Cape. Sino and David were on hand to receive the award. Funds received will help us share even more books with children in Africa. Thank you, Community Chest!

Masifunde Sidlala means: Let's read and have fun!
Because learning to read shouldn't only be about getting the right answer.
It should also be about discovering a funny story. Laughing at a picture. Reading the same book for the tenth time. Recognising a word you've seen before.
Sitting next to someone you love and sharing a story. Reading should be something children want to do. That's at the heart of Masifunde Sidlala.

Last week, we met with our community partners to get feedback on brand-new books. It's important to listen to those who will actually be using our books in the local community. These two stories are special because they were developed in a StoryShop with these same partners. Feedback we received will improve these books and help create even more joy of reading.

What happens when a child takes a book home? It might be read at bedtime. Or at the kitchen table. It might be read to a younger brother or sister. A parent might discover that their child can read. A grandmother might tell a story from her own childhood. And that one book might be read again and again.

This is why, through Masifunde Sidlala, we don't just want children to encounter books. We want children to own books. Our programme provides children with books in their own languages to take home and build their own little libraries. Because reading shouldn't stop when the school day ends.

Today, the Little Zebra Books team engaged in a mini olympics as part of a team building activity. The Pink People team performed valiantly but were vanquished by the Big Blue Busters. We stacked cups, sorted sweets, and David and Jeni tried to pick up cotton balls with their noses covered in Vaseline! We're so lucky to be a part of this amazing team!
